An inclination towards music that was “north of 45″ began in middle school in the early to mid 80s. New Wave from the UK was hitting with full force. But, bands like Squeeze, The Cult and Siouxie & the Banshees were influencing a less mainstream generation — one that appreciated a wide range of music and influences that just so happened to live in Northern Europe. Enter the early 90s in college: London House hit hard. Seattle Grunge and the new evolution of alternative began. In the mid-90s, a new style of artists put another premium on musical and lyrical exploration. In the early 2000s, an even wider, more adventurous net was cast. Iceland, Sweden and Norway reintroduced the world to some outstanding work. The UK continued it’s path. France carved out exciting territory. Seattle and Minneapolis continued their journeys as well. Today, that roster includes anything from pop, rock, alternative, electronic, folk — and everywhere in between.
45north is an opportunity to explore this “musical anthropology” that lives north of the 45th parallel. The show is more of a love letter to this music and these artists. It’s not about expertise or “hey look how much I know about this music,” 45north is purely about appreciation of the artists, songs and genres and how this music shapes experiences, influences and lives. It’s also about sharing music and artists that we all appreciate, value and love from these parts of the world.
We feel when we listen to music. As fate would have it, the music and artists that influenced me most are from 45north. Enjoy the show.
