You asked for it so we might as well try…

Quite a few listeners of PDX.FM’s Morning Submission have requested that we offer up our own Emily Gibson to enter the Women of Radio Co-host for a Day Search — basically, Emily would take the place of Kelly on Live with Regis and Kelly for a day. What could be better? So, here’s what YOU can do — go to the link above, nominate Emily, and keep your fingers crossed. Better yet, track down other nominees and hobble them, Tanya Harding style … what could be more Portland than that?

Link back to this post when you nominate: http://tiny.cc/regisandemily

We’re trying to make this easy. Thanks.

Cigarettes suck.

There, we said it.

Even so, three of the four PDX.FM Morning Submission hosts smoke regularly. Robert, Sabrina, and Emily are all slaves to the Evil Corporate Nicotine Dick™ and Unibash Radio’s Jay Mackin has had enough.

On Wednesday, June 2nd at 8AM, join Jay Mackin as he and Portland hypnotherapist Shirley Kimmell attempt to break the rest of the crew of their nasty habit and save what’s left of their pink little lungs from drowning in black tar hell.

Maybe Emily’s throat will finally clear…? Stranger things have happened.

Listen to Morning Submission live right here on PDX.FM every weekday morning at 8AM, or on iTunes or Stitcher Radio, shortly after the live broadcast.

iPhoneSlutz is often one of the most downloaded gadget podcasts on iTunes. Every week, thousands of listeners hear Emily, Rose, and Sabrina put on arguably the most fun, and sometimes a little vulgar, audio podcast and radio show about iPhone apps around.

Help the Slutz celebrate their 50th episode by choosing all of the apps they review this week.

To suggest an app for the Slutz to review, just leave a comment below. And be sure to leave your name, you’ll get full credit (or a good reaming if your app sucks!).

As the end of the week drew near, the excitement in Portland grew... and grew... and grew. It could only mean one thing. The Portland Timber Season Home Opener was finally here.

By Sabrina Miller

As the end of the week drew near, the excitement in Portland grew… and grew… and grew. You could feel it in the air. You could smell the anticipation all around PGE Park. You could feel it on sites like Twitter, Facebook, other fan blogs. It could only mean one thing. The Portland Timber Season Home Opener was finally drawing near.

For those of us fortunate enough to attend this sold out game of 15,418 people this past Saturday night, it was a hell of an opener. I was extremely fortunate to have been invited to sit in the VIP section of the Beer Garden for the game featuring the Rochester Rhinos vs. Portland Timbers (Thank you Tim, Marina & Emily)! The free food, drinks and merchandise was enough to have put my giddy-ness over the top, until I met the Timbers owner, Merritt Paulson, talked to the Timbers Chief Operations Officer and had a nice chat with KPTV’s General Manager Patrick McCreary. It was a pleasure to meet them, however, (and no offense guys), but I gotta say…. seeing the players walk onto the field, seeing and hearing the Timbers Army rally everyone to get on their feet, feeling the sheer excitement in the air had my heart racing. It’s something that everyone in this city needs to experience. Fan or not. If you haven’t been to a game yet, you need to get your butt to one. General Admission tickets are insanely cheap.

I finally couldn’t take anymore of not being with the Timbers Army so I sprinted to section 107 in the 80th minute and made my way down to see some friends. I wasn’t there but 5 minutes until it happened. Something I’ve never seen before in my limited time so far going to Timbers games. A penalty kick goal. Nope, never seen one. So thank you Ryan Pore and the rest of the Timbers for making that happen. For always putting that magic in the stadium. For giving fans, kids, coaches and staff such a natural high that can’t be experienced anywhere else and for making it so my clothes smelled like a smoke bomb the rest of the evening. It’s one of the best smells in the world.

I can’t wait for the rest of the season. Good or bad, highs or lows, it doesn’t matter. As the Timbers slogan states this year: You can’t fake this. No, you sure can’t and I’m damn proud to be a part of it.

Here are some of the pics I took during the game…. and some after the game too… a fun little reminder to me why it’s all worth it.

No, PDX.FM is not for sale. Stop asking. Thank you.
Have a nice day.

Hey Kids,

After over two dozen inquiries in the past few days, we thought it worth clearing the air and making it official that PDX.FM is NOT FOR SALE.

Apparently an ad posted on Craigslist recently (see below or click here until the link expires) has caused some confusion…

It’s kind of stupid that we should even have to address this but rest assured that we’re not interested in selling anything. We have no idea which Internet radio station the ad is referring to. Perhaps next time try emailing the person through Craigslist and try to get more information that way? Hmmmm… There’s an idea.

Everyone's a critic. Hear what some of the more vocal critics of PDX.FM have to say about us.
Monday, April 5th, at 8am on Portland Sucks.

Almost no PDX.FM show is spared, almost no PDX.FM host is left unscathed.

Thumbs down!

Thanks to the power of the Internet, nearly everyone’s a critic these days. Each day here at PDX.FM we get quite a few emails from listeners telling us what we’re doing right – and we appreciate those, we really do. What’s quite a bit more fun to read thouse are the complaints, critiques, suggestions, and all-out hate mail that some listeners seem to spend hours composing… and we want to share it with you.

So, on Monday, April 5th at 8am, PDX.FM founder and resident mailroom jockey RobertWagner joins Sabrina Miller for a very special episode of Portland Sucks, where we read and respond to the best of the worst – as written by our harshest, and sometimes most illiterate, critics.

Thankfully a few of them actually give us some advice too because, you know, it’s working as a graveyard shift stock boy at Walmart that really gives one the insight and expertise to create great Internet radio.

Introducing PDX.AM - because we needed to do something with the domain name we bought...

A few weeks ago we received word that the domain name “pdx.am” was up for auction. We hadn’t really been looking for it, in fact I wasn’t even aware that .am was even a valid TLD (turns out it belongs to Armenia) and we figured we might already be pushing things a little too far with .fm anyway since it was more meant as a means of thumbing our noses at modern terrestrial radio than anything – fun to say though it might be.

The more I thought about it though, the more I realized that losing the pdx.am domain to someone else might be a bad idea. Terrestrial radio has two (count ‘em TWO!) bands on which to deliver continuous commercial loops and Nickelback songs whereas the Internet, and Internet radio/podcasting, isn’t bound by such limitations. That said, who could resist the temptation of owning both .AM and .FM in a given market such as Portland? Not me. So, rather than fulfill my lifelong dream of buying a Suzuki GSX-R600 with cash, I bought another domain. Joy.

Let there be PDX.AM

One of the issues we’ve run into with trying to monetize PDX.FM has been the conflict of interest problems between the two channels. The Interwebs move at lightning speed, sure, but marketing people tend to crawl at a snails pace. It’s been extremely difficult to have (ahem) so-called controversial content sitting right next to Parenting Unplugged Radio, even though the listeners of one need never listen to the other if they don’t want to. This has led to quite a few internal discussions in which we all put our heads together and resolve nothing – in true modern marketing fashion. With PDX.AM now available to us though, we’re hoping this problem might just become a thing of the past.

No more channel two

So, as of Midnight on Monday, March 22nd, 2010 – PDX.FM Channel two is now officially PDX.AM. Same shows, same topics, different website. PDX.FM is now free to be as nasty as it wants to be and advertisers on both can breathe a sigh of sweet relief that no one is going to scream “lick my taint” and then cut into a 30 second spot for a wholesome children’s breakfast cereal. We’re obviously not going to leave it all at that, not even close, but that’s all the information you’re going to get right now. It’s all about marketing and we’d just as soon be as obvious and transparent about these things as we possibly can be, and for obvious reasons – you’ve listened to us this far and you, the listener, are really the only person in this whole equation that we give a damn about anyway.

So, from the people here at PDX.FM, we hope you’ll enjoy PDX.AM too. It’s a whole lot easier than saying “PDX.FM Channel Two” plus it helped us steal our own idea back from the clutches of a completely evil asshole that just wanted to copy what we’re already doing anyway.

UPDATE (03.22.2010 @ 2:20AM) – As always, if you have questions, comments, suggestions, or good old fashion criticisms, you are always welcome to send them directly to me at robert@pdx.fm. PDX.FM and PDX.AM are meant to be sources of entertaining and informative programming for a wide and varied audience – it is Portland, Oregon and the surrounding region after all – and this is completely meaningless without input from you. We’re in a unique position in that we don’t receive our instructions, (mis)guidance, and paychecks from some old geezer in Washington State – we answer only to the people of the best goddamn city in the country.

The culmination of a decades-long quest to become the first people ever to climb the 58 peaks in the lower 48 states. Friday at 2pm on PDX.FM Channel One.

On August 17, 2008 with his long-time pal Duane, Bob Bolton made their way to the top of Mt. Cleveland, the highest peak in Montana’s Glacier National Park. This summit marked the culmination of their decades-long quest to become the first people ever to climb the 58 peaks in the lower 48 states, including pre-eruption Mt. St. Helens, with topographic prominence greater than 5000 feet, also known as ultra-prominence peaks. In addition to ultra-prominence peaks, Bob and his friends have hiked to the high point of every county in Oregon and Washington.

On the show, Alex and Bob will discuss exactly what prominence means, how you measure it, and why he’s passionate about it. But most of all, Bob will share stories about his 40-year adventure.

USL Portland Timbers take on The Seattle Sounders FC in the Emerald City for a “friendly” pre-season training match. This is likely to be the only “friendly” match with the Sounders this year. The next time we see them the Portland Timbers will be MLS and we will be playing them toe to toe.

This Thursday March 11th, 4 packed busses holding Timber fans (including our own Sabrina Miller), will caravan up to Seattle to help support our Portland Timbers. With an awesome rate for a match ticket and a bus ride, we will be taking over the North End of Qwest stadium. If you haven’t secured your ticket for the game, there are only a few left. Head to TimbersArmy.org for more information.

Proceeds from the match will benefit the Sounders four community partners: Boys and Girls Club of Washington State, Save the Children, Seattle SCORES and Washington Youth Soccer.

Join us right here on Thursday, Feb. 18th at 7:00AM to find out just how seriously we take our (ahem) craft, as PDX.FM's own RobertWagner live blogs for almost* the entire day.

10:15PM - A few more beverages and I’m spent for the night. I have to be up and alert for what is probably the longest (ahem) “broadcast” day of my (ahem) “career” tomorrow in which I will be (ahem) “on air” for no fewer than 7 hours during the course of the day. If you aren’t tired of me yet, you soon will be.

7:30PM - A light crowd at first for the 7th Planet Picture Show but pretty full by the time the movie is over. Jay Mackin is a natural for this sort of thing and manages to steer clear of excessive dead celebrity jokes this time.

6:45PM – Hanging out with Dave, the new owner from Mt. Tabor, he’s a pretty cool guy. Alex from Hike Yeah shows up and we drink beer and proceed to talk about the Android dev kit, Mac vs. Windows API’s, and … everything except hiking pretty much.

6:00PM - Trying out this new “bus” thing that everyone keeps talking about so that I can get over to the Mt. Tabor Theater for the 7th Planet Picture Show. Apparently you need something called “exact change”, I don’t have that so I walk instead… and walk… and walk…

5:00PM – Locking up and leaving. Wow, what a stressful and taxing day. Be sure to check back here tomorrow and I’ll (not)live blog the evening – retroactively. Oh yeah, and tune in tomorrow morning at 8AM for double the Portland Sucks fun as we talk to Nathaniel Boggess about Entertainment For People at 8AM and Erica from Red Light Clothing about the Naked Shopping Spree at 9AM.

4:57PM - The last show of the day is over and that means it’s beer time. Unfortunately, I don’t think there’s any left… #blerg. Time to head out for a meeting with Alex from Hike Yeah at 6:30 and then off to the 7th Planet Picture Show at 7:00pm and then… well… who knows? Let’s see, that’ll take me to somewhere around 9:00 to 9:30pm – that’s about a 14 hour work day – I think I’ll mark that down for some overtime.

4:39PM – Slowly realizing that Love in the Dump Chute would make a great drinking game – today’s word is “bang”.

4:24PM – Arguing with Sabrina “Fatboy” Miller about whether or not men can wear an excessive amount of jewelry or not. She’s accused me of overdoing it today. Sabrina’s method of “arguing” pretty much consists of making a statement and then burying herself in work, pretending that she doesn’t hear my rebuttal. She lies. She hears me. She just doesn’t find this to be a fun game and doesn’t want to play anymore.

4:19PM – Oh yeah, Studio Cat won.

Studio Cat

4:14PM – There are few things more disturbing in life than wondering what that smell is and realizing that it’s you.

4:08PM – Battle Royale: February 2010! Studio Cat vs. Perpetually Running Toilet vs. RobertWagner! And now… posting today’s podcasts and going over plans for the evening hours while listening to Love in the Dump Chute

3:50PM – Nerd Report Radio guests – CosPlayers: Scott, Meg, and…. well… Meg’s sister

3:24PM - Finally back at the PDX.FM studios. Walked in on The Nerd Report, already in progress. I can’t remember what the topic of the day is – something to do with costumes or something… UPDATE: CosPlay! Yeah, that’s what it is… Now I remember.

2:42PM - Wow, it’s an all-star cast at Big Ass Sandwiches today… Just as I’m leaving, Doug Zanger – man of a million PDX.FM broadcasts – shows up. Still a Big Ass Virgin, he’s game to try a Big Ass Ham Sandwich.

2:35PM - Badazzmofo David Walker is here now… and he has a wicked cool Spiderman hat. I can’t rock a Spiderman hat, I’m unworthy of such things.

2:29PM – Stopped by Big Ass Sandwiches and got a free Mexi-Coke (thanks!) and witnessed a wicked cool demo of a credit card processing iPhone app while enjoying a shot of their Au Jus (yes, a SHOT of their Au Jus) – I could sit here all day and drink this stuff, it’s like liquid roast beef.

2:22PM - Went to try to get Voodoo Doughnuts for the rest of the crew – not sure if Fatboy Miller has ever seen the penis doughnut or not… The line is WAY too long for my feable attention span though. Bummer.

2:09PM - I think I was just accidentally rude to someone. I feel like a dick now.

1:58PM – Someone please inform the Android WordPress plugin people to fix their permalink function, this wee little oversight makes it rather difficult to live blog with my Droid… #liveblogfail

1:48PM – Seriously, listen to Betsy Richter’s voice while playing Can I Sit Next To You? By AC/DC… yeah… ohhhh yeah.

1:41PM – Getting mail and cutting (not shredding) cheese down on 3rd Ave. Enjoy! That must be my bottled margarita coming back to haunt us.

1:25PM – no officer, I don’t need assistance. I’m just doing my best impression of those old ipod commercials… I’m sorry its not to your liking. I will do better next time.

1:04PM – Wow… I’ve never noticed how… uhhh… sultry… Betsy Richter’s voice is. Again… wow. Taking a quick 45 minute break from blogging to go run errands. Sorry. Unavoidable. Besides, I want to hear this without thinking about blogging.

12:56PM - Getting ready to listen to the WORLD PREMIERE of Betsy Richter’s new show here on the PDX.FM called “Redoing Media”… If anyone around these parts had clue number one about media and how to redo it, well, it’d be Betsy.

12:43PM - Discussing the possibility of a PDX.FM Volleyball team… because I’m a absolutely badass volleyball player, especially when tightly wrapped in highly-binding short shorts.

12:34PM - Apparently Emily thinks Empire Labs is in the food business… which I guess they sort of are sometimes if you count the chocolate Clone-a-Willy… Otherwise, I don’t think this idea would really work.

12:31PM – Lunch is delicious… Finding out that somebody doesn’t know when to quit fucking up their website is not. And no, I’m not going to fix it, we already had that conversation and YOU said “your web guy” would “take care of everything”… Nice. How’d that work out for you?

12:10PM – Lunch! Dosariks…. or however you spell it.

11:56AM – Playing a song by Blood Eagle that features the terms “Chicken McNuggets” and “Fish Filet” – Blood Eagle will be performing at Zombotica next month. Yay. That makes me happy.

11:46AM – Holding a neck vain popping contest to see who has the most defined neck vains whilst emulating a professional wrestler. I think I would have won except I hurt myself. Unfortunately Sabrina doesn’t understand how to use my camera…

11:40AM – Chatty chatbox on FML Radio today. No, I will only play ONE song by The Doors – ever. If you don’t want to hear that ONE song by The Doors that I can actually tolerate then you’re shit out of luck, sorry. There are plenty of “ahem” classic rock options out there… Pick one.

11:29AM - Fatboys Roberts and Miller…

Fatboys Miller & Roberts

11:07AM - Getting ready for FML Radio…

10:59AM – Playing football (or soccer if you’re not from Portland) with dog poop. I didn’t win.

Poop... or makeshift sporting goods?

10:52AM - …The cleaning lady… her and I don’t get along.

10:46AM - The cleaning woman here is slowly driving me insane. I swear, she waits for me to get on the phone and then cranks on the vacuum cleaner so that I can’t hear. I can SEE her, waiting for me to say something and then POW, clicks the thing on. Next she’s start hosing everything in sight down with disinfectant foot spray because apparently we are rather germy.

10:28AM - Oooooh! Conference call is all about things that are better than sex – like coding and logic and cruise ships! They damn well better be, I’m missing a Byron Beck episode and I won’t have time to listen to it now until tomorrow. Meanwhile, Emily appears to be crashing from a lack of caffeine now that I’ve successfully stolen her morning supply.

10:13AM - I see that Fatboy Miller is leading The Oregonian peeps back upstairs to watch the Fatboy Roberts show. It doesn’t look like Byron brought any food to leave behind this time, that makes me sad…. and hungry.

10:09AM - …And off the live blog for a few minutes while I attempt to calm down and sit in on a conference call.

10:04AM - Fueled by almost an entire NOS Grape that I downed in less than 10 minutes, I beat the crap out of Emily Gibson in an impromptu hopping contest outside. No one can out hop me these days. No one.

09:56AM – Heading down to let Cort, Fatboy, and Byron Beck into the studio… Oregonian folks in hot pursuit

9:41AM - Trying out the grape NOS, cut with Mountain Dew – ok by itself, tastes like anal discharge when mixed with Mountain Dew

9:16AM – Ahhh, the morning’s first liquid through the nose was …. Yoohoo. Laughs at the expense of Gresham, which, according to Emily Gibson, is one of the southern states.

9:12AM - A conversation about “rod riding” with Emily Gibson ensues, “rod riding” of course is the hard-to-master art of riding a bicycle without a seat.

9:06AM - Today’s Meat Show features the all new Grape Flavored NOS – containing 343mg of caffeine that no one here really needs.

8:06AM - Ladies and Gentlemen, Fatboy Miller…

7:56AM – Live blogging comes to a grinding halt here for about 45 minutes as we get ready to go live at 8am on channel one…

7:36AM - Well that was pointless, no gems to be had there today…

7:34AM - I should probably start thinking about today’s Portland Sucks show and getting some notes together… When you need inspiration, look no further than the regions most inspirational ultramega-megastar, Daniel Baldwin…

7:14AM - Sabrina Miller begins her day by frantically cleaning every horizontal surface in sight. Initially I’m confused, then she reminds me that The Oregonian is sending a photographer over here today. I wonder if they’ll let me take pictures of the photographer taking pictures? Photographers almost never get their pictures taken unless it’s for that cliché shot that they all have in their bios… You know, the one where they’re facing left and snapping an important shot of something you can’t see.

6:51AM - Good morning Portland…

The view from the PDX.FM studio.

6:14AM - Coffee time at the Starbucks at 9th and Park. It’s my lame excuse to use Foursquare to be “mayor” so I do a quick check-in. If only I checked in every time I walked through the door here, I’d probably be mayor for life, but I forget half the time

5:43AM - Checking email. There’s a vague email from Jay Mackin. Turns out there won’t be a Unibash Radio today. Jay is always a little over apologetic about these things, which is sort of unnecessary, it’s not like he’s on the payroll or anything like that, we’re just happy to have him because he makes us laugh. The downside to this of course is that it forces us to do a slightly longer Portland Sucks show and no one wants that.

5:07AM – I wake up. See? It’s already exciting.

What’s this all about?

Have you ever wanted to know what goes on behind the scenes at PDX.FM? No? Well, we’re going to tell you anyway.

Every day we get at least a couple of resumes from silly, naive folks wanting to work at PDX.FM who figure this is all just fun and games – well, it is, and we want to share it.

Join us right here on Thursday, Feb. 18th at 7:00AM to find out just how seriously we take our (ahem) craft, as PDX.FM’s own RobertWagner live blogs for an almost* the entire day.

*live blogging during the Portland Sucks show WILL be limited as RW can only do so much multitasking.

We’ve said it before. We’re new at all of this.

One of the most frequent requests we get here at PDX.FM is that we post a larger program schedule that gives our listeners one of those fancy “at a glance” views of what’s coming up instead of just the daily schedule on the sidebar of the site.

Currently, the PDX.FM show line up is changing pretty rapidly across both channels and we’re constantly looking to add new shows that we think you might be interested in. We’re a small operation and we’re working with a lot of people that have day jobs so it hasn’t been prudent to create a month long schedule just yet because sometimes things change week to week, and sometimes the schedules change in the middle of the day (we do what we can to avoid it but it happens).

Rest assured though, we’re working on it.

By Doug Zanger

I’m not exactly sure when (or why) I decided to sign up for the Portland Timbers open tryout. It was most likely, a quick, “why the heck not” kind of thing. But, it actually did fall in to the theme of my 2010 resolutions: try a few new things here and there.

This would qualify as something new for sure.

Friday night, I got my bag ready. There was Gatorade, water, some bandages for my feet (I tend to blister), energy bars and a bunch of changes of clothes. I was probably more ready to take a hike with Alex from Hike Yeah as opposed to getting out on the pitch for a couple of days of soccer.

As I arrived Saturday morning, it was pretty much as I had expected: a bunch of younger guys. Being 40, I was clearly the oldest one there. I met a few guys who were in their 30s, but most were in their 20s — and in their soccer prime. As we were warming up and stretching, I made a “don’t ever get old” comment to a young fella from B.C. who had come down for the weekend. He asked how old I was. When I told him I was 40 he said, “no way! I thought you were like, 27 or something.”

That was the little boost of energy I needed to get going. You can imagine the smile after that comment.

The first short-sided game was uneventful. We were all just getting our legs under ourselves. I was on a great team with some very good players. What encouraged me, though, was just how nice everyone was. They were incredibly supportive every step of the way. This was a highly competitive environment yet it proved to me, once again, that soccer is an amazing community.

The second match was much better.

Near the end of play, I was up front and a ball ended up bounding high over my head about 15 yards out. I had only one choice: take the shot. The ball arced high over my right shoulder, I turned towards the goal waited until the ball got around my chest and wound up to take the shot. I caught that thing square, put all kinds of mustard and spin on it and put it in the lower right side of the net. The goalie (who was really good) got a finger on it, but it was about as perfect a shot as I could have asked for. Now, I’ve had some pretty good goals in my career — but this was probably one of the best.

After the final whistle, I grabbed my iPhone to tweet about it. Coach Amos Magee of the Timbers, who ran everything, said, with a big smile, “ don’t forget to tell them about the goal.” It was my second of glory and I wasn’t going to miss sharing it.

The rest of the day was relatively uneventful. The 11 v. 11 games were fun, but I didn’t quite get in to the flow. I didn’t pay poorly, but I couldn’t replicate the magic of that first goal. On Sunday, sore and tired, I played a bit in the first match then decided that this 40-year old body had had enough. I walked to Coach Magee and told him that I was done for the weekend. After saying how pleased he was that I had come out to give it a go, he said, “we’re all still talking about that goal from yesterday. It was great.” And that’s all I needed to hear to consider my first (and likely last) Portland Timbers tryout a rousing success.

I’d first like to thank everyone who encouraged me on Twitter. I am pleased that you all were supporting an “old man” trying to live the “glory days” a bit. I’d also like to thank all of the players I met over the weekend. Some had traveled as far as France, B.C. and Tacoma to be there. I enjoyed my brief chats with everyone and wish those who make it to the next round of tryouts the best of luck (be on the lookout for a kid from France potentially making the squad — one of the best players I have ever seen).

Most importantly, though, I’d like to thank the Portland Timbers, the coaching staff and especially Coach Amos Magee. The entire weekend was run extremely well and everyone was treated with respect, dignity and class — all of the earmarks of the sport all of us love so much.

Having been “behind the curtain” a little bit I can say, without question, that we are very lucky to have such a great team and organization here. Everything, from top to bottom, is run extraordinarily well and they represent our city and the sport of soccer better than any of us could even imagine. I know I’m looking forward to the season and MLS in 2010.

And I’m hoping that one or two of the guys from this weekend make the squad and get a chance to be part of it all.

Hosted by Zanger
Weekdays at 9am on PDX.FM Channel Two

Greeting cards are, in some ways, the original Twitter. Get a few words in to express how you feel and see what happens. The words might be funny, sardonic, epic, powerful, sad, humble or somewhere in between. But behind the “quick,” there are layers and layers of emotion, depth and nuance.

Much like Portland.

Outsiders laud (or deride) us for our ways and way of life. We are envied. We are a quirky curiosity. In some ways, we are overlooked and quickly cast aside with a few words and not much thought.

And that’s not all bad.

As long as we all know that we are here together, sharing something cool, that’s really all that matters.

And that’s what The Life Portlandic is all about.

It’s more than a show, it’s an appreciation of Portland, our state and the Pacific Northwest. It’s about sharing stories of hope, thanks and optimism. It’s about the people and organizations that do good. It’s the collective thought and conversation that continues to galvanize the Portlandic vibe.

The Life Portlandic, a daily love letter to the place that we call home.

Listen to The Life Portlandic, Hosted by Zanger
Weekdays at 9am on PDX.FM Channel Two.

We've moved. And thanks to a recommendation from OurPDX's Betsy Richter we couldn't be happier with our new web home.

Sometime back in September, when we first launched PDX.FM, web traffic was just about the furthest thing on our minds. We had listener slots and stream speed to think about, shows to plan, events to organize, a podcast studio to fine-tune – who has time to think about web hosting? Well, December was a record month for us in many ways, and with the holiday season also came the realization that we couldn’t ignore our crappy old web hosting any longer – we had to get away or suffer the wrath of even more angry emails.

Well, thanks to the recommendation of Betsy Richter (of OurPDX fame), we no longer have to live in fear of an inbox full of wrath. Betsy pointed us in the direction of Portland-based web hosts Network Redux and we couldn’t be happier.

So, if you had an odd connection issue or two these past few days, don’t fret – the dust has finally settled and we’re all moved in at our new home on our very own server.

Thanks Betsy.

Besides a love of living here, many Portlanders have pets. It doesn’t matter what kind of pet you have, dog, cat, rabbit, or bird, they all have nutritional needs. The host of Special Pets, Special Needs, Lisa Stahr will be talking with Dr. Susan G. Wynn about Pet Nutrition this Tuesday, December 8th at 1:00PM. You won’t want to miss this controversial topic!

Dr. Wynn provides veterinary nutritional counseling services through The Clinical Nutrition Service at Georgia Veterinary Specialists in Atlanta. She is also the co-author of 4 book on holistic medicine, and is certified in acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, and in western herbal medicine through the American Herbalist Guild.

Step two (optional): Touch the [+] button while you’re on the pdx.fm iPhone page and then select “Add to Home Screen” and your iPhone or iPod Touch will add an icon so you can listen with one touch.

We’re still testing so if you have any difficulties, please let us know by sending an email to contact@pdx.fm – let us know what the issue is and we’ll see if we can’t help you out.

Cool. But what if I don’t have an iPhone?

Don’t worry. We’re working on adding support for other popular phones. In fact, we’re probably working on it while you’re busy reading this.

With a record attendance of over 700 people, the Portland Retro Gaming Expo was a huge success and the gals from Nerd Report Radio were there to bring you all of the excitement live.

Hosts of the show, Emily Gibson and Sabrina Miller, brought the listening audience all the updated news from the convention and interviews from the attendees and vendors alike.

Interviewing everyone from local kids in costumes to people with some awesome finds, they also talked with Nintendo Age, Recycled Gamer, Bill Carlton and Y-Bot Classic Games, the organizers of PRGE, tournament championship winners and other attendees that just wanted to share their gaming addiction.

“This was by far the coolest event I’ve ever attended. There were so many people that wanted to sit down and just talk to us. There was a human Mario there – are you kidding me? It doesn’t get any better than that!”
- Emily Gibson

“This was a great family event, I can’t believe the amount of kids that were in attendance. It was such a cool thing to see so many people walking around with the gear they wanted and people were really excited that there were a ton of games to play. The organizers of this event did a fantastic job and I can’t wait for next years event!”
- Sabrina Miller

There will be more photos of the event added to www.nerdreportradio.com soon and Emily & Sabrina are working hard to put together a montage of audio clips for a special 1 hour episode of Nerd Report Radio on Thursday the 24th.
And on our second day, nearly everything went wrong... And that's the good news.

Not even 48 hours into the first week of PDX.FM and already we had some downtime this afternoon. For those that tried to listen live between 11:30 and 12:45 (and then again between 2:45 and 3:15) we apologize. The shape of things to come? We hope so – the outage was caused by strain on one of the stream servers so we just figure that it’s good to be loved, there’s nothing worse than a whole bunch of bandwidth and no one to listen.

Anyway, sorry about that, everything should be back to normal and we’ll be better prepared next time. Affected shows will either be available as podcasts or aired again later in the week or on the weekend, check with the applicable show pages tomorrow for more info on that.

The site is live and the stream is up but we've still got a long way to go.
A little bit about what we're planning with PDX.FM

Launching something like PDX.FM probably seems easy from the outside. We’re not exactly changing the world here, I mean, at its core we’re running an 8-12 hour a day streaming internet station with some podcasting on the side. It isn’t rocket science. Well, what you see is really only part of it. Behind the scenes we’re gathering guests, plotting new shows, coordinating hosts, planning events, and dealing with the technical pieces (all too much) – all while trying to figure out how to make a living doing this thing that we love and all while living our respective personal lives. And isn’t that what life is all about?

So what the hell is this PDX.FM thing anyway?

We like to think of it as social audio entertainment for the people – the people of Portland, Oregon, who are our most favorite people in the world. You see, none of us are native Portlanders. I’m the closest thing to one by birth but mom and dad saw fit to raise me some 180 miles north of here – it wasn’t my choice. The wonderful thing about a place like Portland though is that so many interesting and entertaining people live here and call this place their home. Portland isn’t “weird” all by itself, it takes a community to make it that way, and it’s that community that we’re ultimately hoping to entertain with PDX.FM – or go flat broke trying.

Is it radio? Not really, though we know it shares some similarities. Is it podcasting? A little bit but a podcast is really just a content delivery system at the end of the day. No, PDX.FM is about our lives, the things we like to do, the places we like to eat and drink, our politics, our music, our art, our city. Yes, we know that not every show we do is going to resonate with every listener out there – that’s what makes Portlanders unique. We’re opinionated, creative people and we each have a story to tell.

We envision PDX.FM as Portland’s very own non-stop variety show. We’re here to entertain and inform and we’d like nothing better than for you to join us. We’re starting small because we are small but the beauty in that is that we don’t answer to anyone but you. We don’t have investors or stuffy guys in cheap suits telling us what we can and can’t do. We don’t have a marketing department analyzing every step and misstep we take.

We have something better. We have the weird little city called Portland.

Thanks for visiting PDX.FM, an experiment in social audio entertainment for the people.

We’d love to tell you that we’re breakin’ out the champagne right now in celebration of our nifty new website but the truth is we’re too damn tired to even be writing this site launch notification.

Instead, we just want to thank you for stopping by and encourage you to do so often as we’ll be bringing you quite a few new and interesting shows and podcasts in the very near future. From music to entertainment to sports to special interest, the goal at PDX.FM is to create a Portland-centric place for the stuff you’d listen to on the radio – if the radio actually played something you’d want to listen to.

Almost all of the shows on PDX.FM are streamed live first and then made available for podcast shortly thereafter. We encourage you to interact with any of our show hosts during live streams or email us at contact@pdx.fm with your show ideas, comments, suggestions, etc.

Yes, this is the most lame site launch post in recent memory but we’d rather talk about it than type about it. If you’d like to know more, we encourage you to listen to this:

Thanks again for visiting and we appreciate the listen.
