To wit, I used to make (the best) hoagies and cheesesteaks outside of Philly during my college summers. I’ve tasted some of the best New York City has to offer. And they are all amateur hour compared to what we have in Portland.

To celebrate Portland’s rightful place in the pantheon of the country’s very best, The Life Portlandic is pleased to announce a photo contest for the month of March:

It’s the Sandwich City USA Photo Contest.

Yes, we are stealing a page out of the Breakfast in Bridgetown and Hike Yeah playbooks, but nothing says “I love Portland sandwiches” more than sharing with all of us.

Here are the rules:

1) Order a sandwich. It could be an old favorite or a new friend.

2) Snap a picture BEFORE you take your first bite. (I know, your mouth will be watering, but please try your best.)

3) Send it to us at tlpdx@me.com with the sandwich name, a short description of the aforementioned sandwich and where you bought it. You may be as basic or effusive as you like but bear in mind that creativity helps immensely here.

We will post the sandwich photos on our site and choose the one that looks the tastiest and has the best description.

The winner will receive a $25 gift card to the Portland sandwich place of their choice.

The topic time this around is urban hiking/walking: city views that you can twalk to, city parks you can walk through, etc.  As usual, this is open to interpretation; be creative. Laura Foster, author of numerous books about urban hikes/walks, will be my guest on January 29, and she’ll help me judge the photos. Here’s the deal: We want to hear your best Portland breakfast story. That might not be the best meal you ever ate, or even the worst, but it will be a good story.

Give us up to 500 words, and we’ll judge it on two categories: how good is the story, and how good is the writing? The judges for this contest are:

• Paul Gerald, author and publisher of Breakfast in Bridgetown: The Definitive Guide to Portland’s Favorite Meal, and the host of the PDX.FM radio show of the same name.
• Mindie Kniss, frequent guest on the show and organizer of the PDX Breakfast Club on Meetup.com. She’s an editor at two lit magazines and an integrative life coach; see KnissCoaching.com.
• A Judge to be Named Later.

We’ll be taking submissions until the end of the day on Friday, January 29th, and we’ll announce the winner during the show on Friday, February 5th.

This one should be fun. Here’s a wrap-up of the photo contest Alex ran two weeks ago. He gave last contest winner, Jessica a signed copy of Paul Gerald’s book 60 Hikes Within 60 Miles of Portland. Not sure what the next prize(s) will be, but more details will be posted  here soon.

For now, here are the rules. There are two different themes, but if you can manage to combine them in one photo, you’ll get an even bigger prize. The two themes are water (oceans, lakes, rivers, waterfalls, fog, etc.) and fall colors (trees, gray skies, first snow, etc.). It doesn’t matter whether or not your photo(s) has people in it.

Find a good photo or two that you’ve taken.

Make sure the photo(s) has something to do with the themes of water and/or fall colors.
