A discussion with Kathleen Bauer of the blog GoodStuffNW, about breakfast, writing and farmers markets, on Breakfast in Bridgetown April 16th at 1:00PM

Join host Paul Gerald this week for a rambling, fun discussion of breakfast, writing and farmers markets with Kathleen Bauer of the GoodStuffNW blog. Kathleen is a freelance food writer who has written about markets, cuisine and food issues for three years.

Fourth generation Oregonian Kathleen Bauer was four years old when she began riding cattle horses and going on cattle drives on her grandfather’s ranch in Eastern Oregon. The love for the region that came from that experience was part of the inspiration for starting her blog, GoodStuffNW. “It’s a real gift to be able to write about the things I love,” says Bauer, who began her professional life as an advertising art director. She’s also written features on topics as varied as chicken farmers, the Basque community of Boise, winter farmers’ markets and the cuisine of the Hmong community in the US for the Oregonian’s FoodDay section, MIX magazine, NW Palate magazine, Edible Portland and Culinate.com. Cooking (and eating) and gardening keep her out of trouble the rest of the time, and she likes nothing better than having friends over for dinner at the home she shares with her husband and son in NE Portland.

Breakfast in Bridgetown airs every Friday at 1pm on PDX.FM

Can’t listen live? Episodes are available for download approximately one hour after live airing at breakfastinbridgetown.com

Jeff Bayer and Eric D. Snider are movie critics, but not the stuffy, elitist kind. They’re not the idiotic fanboy kind either. So what kind of movie critics are they? The kind with an Internet radio show, that’s what.

“Movie B.S.” features reviews of new films both good and bad, smackdowns of the bad movies of yesteryear, and a plethora of other movie-related features. All of it is tied together by cavalier banter between Bayer and Snider, who noticed that there was a dearth of cavalier banter on the Internet and sought to rectify that.

I’m pleased to welcome Jonathan Maus to the show this week! Jonathan — editor and publisher of BikePortland.org — will join me to talk about the site’s creation & growth, how he pays the bills (I’ll want to hear more about his partnership with Entercom/94.7, for starters) and the challenges he may face straddling the line between objective information provider & passionate cycling advocate.

We’ll be pre-recording on Tuesday afternoon, but I’d love to hear what you’d like me to ask Jonathan — so please post your questions for Jonathan below (or email me at betsy@redoingmedia.com), and join us at 1 pm on Thursday!

Betsy Richter grills PDX.FM founder Robert Wagner, this week on Redoing Media. Thursday at 1pm on PDX.FM Channel One.

From the Redoing Media website…

…the Man. The Myth. The Legend: RobertWagner himself (or @pdxsucks, as many know him) — the evil genius behind pdx.fm.

(Yes, I’m trying some of that hyperbolic flowery language favored by the Fox Networks of the world. Or else I’m *packaging*. Take your pick…)

While Mr. Wagner continues to protest his inclusion in this merry local media dance we’re playing here & does his best to play the ‘aw, shucks’ card when pressed, I very strongly beg to differ. The guy makes media — even though he doesn’t want that Oregonian article preserved in wood plaque form any time soon. He reports on news every morning on Portland Sucks (raise your hand if you’ve heard of an issue for the very first time while listening to Robert & Sabrina on Portland Sucks each morning at 8 am). He’s building out a whole infrastructure to support local Portland news, information & entertainment — that sounds like a media magnate to me, right? And he’s funding the whole thing out of his own pocket.

Of course, he’s now got a few other “media people” lining up to either say they knew him when and/or are part of the inner circle, attempt to follow in his footsteps, and/or suck up to him in Dyson-esque style.

But he’ll be sitting down with me this week. Yes, me. (That rumor that I have something really incriminating on him? Sheer nonsense…) And we’ll be talking about just how pdx.fm began, where he thinks it can/should go, what he’d like to say to some of those hangers-on, and where he sees the gaps here in the Portland media scene.

Sadly, the show won’t be live — but if you want me to <del datetime="2010-03-16T19:18:36+00:00">grill skewer lambaste insinuate </del>ask Robert a question, you should either a) add it as a comment to this post (and nowhere else, please), or b) send me an email at betsy@redoingmedia.com.

(And don’t assume that just because he’s providing me a platform — for FREE, no less — that I’m going to go easy on him. For starters, he’s going to have to dial down that whole F-stream a notch or two…)

Do it before midnight tonight. Hell, do it NOW.

Update: Nope, we won’t be able to take questions via phone call during the show itself. Why? We’re pre-taping, that’s why…

Should Mount Hood and the Columbia River Gorge receive National Park status? Listen to Hike Yeah on March 26 at 2PM for a conversation about the idea and the area.

According to the Mount Hood National Park Campaign:

“It’s certainly true that not every National Forest is worthy of National Park status, but Mount Hood and the Columbia Gorge are special. These are places of world-class scenic and geological significance, and are of a caliber that is easily comparable to the finest national parks in the country. In fact, they already compete with the major national parks as destinations, ranking with places like Yellowstone and Yosemite in visitation. Mount Hood and the Columbia Gorge have been proposed as a national park before, in the 1890s, 1920s and 1930s. The Columbia Gorge was considered for national park status as recently as the 1980s, when the lesser protection of a Forest Service scenic area was enacted.”

Perhaps this coming decade will see a change in how the area is used and preserved.

Listen to Hike Yeah on Friday, March 26 at 2PM to hear Alex’s conversation with Tom Kloster, the organizer of the MHNP Campaign.

Remember The Exorcist? Well, Diana will talk with William Peter Blatty, the author of The Exorcist and a new thriller, Dimiter.

Monday March 15th at 1:00PM on PDX.FM Channel Two

Biography

William Peter Blatty, the writer of numerous novels and screenplays, is best known for his mega-bestselling novel The Exorcist, deemed by the New York Times Book Review to be “as superior to most books of its kind as an Einstein equation is to an accountant’s column of figures.” An Academy Award winner for his screenplay for The Exorcist, Blatty is not only the author of one of the most terrifying novels ever written, but, paradoxically, also cowrote the screenplay for the hilarious Inspector Clouseau film, A Shot in the Dark. New York Times reviewers of his early comic novels noted, “Nobody can write funnier lines than William Peter Blatty,” describing him as “a gifted virtuoso who writes like S. J. Perelman.” Blatty lives with his wife and a son in Maryland.

From Betsy Richter / redoingmedia.com…

Join me this Thursday, March 11th at 1 pm for this week’s edition of Redoing Media. I’m veering from the usual format (designed to accomodate the day job) to broadcast live from the pdx.fm studios. And my guest this week?

None other than Matt Davis, News Editor of the Portland Mercury. Matt, who also shares his POV on both his personal blog — Matt Davis Opens His Mouth — and on Twitter (as @mattdavis999), is known as a fearless & outspoken critic of Portland’s current Police Bureau practices, among others.

I’ll be talking with him about that quote above & how it may apply the state of journalism here in Portland right now. Where are we? Where do we need to go? How are we going to get there? And since Matt’s got that firebrand reputation working for him, I’m sure we’ll hear plenty about how PDX media producers just aren’t rising to the challenge…!

Join us at 1 pm on Thursday, won’t you? (I may even have the chat box up and working by then…)

Local Birth Doulas bring all the voices in pregnancy, childbirth and the first years into one place without judgment, fear or pressure.

Starts Tuesday March 9th at Noon on PDX.FM Channel Two

Hosted by Karen Wells & Erica Matteson

When talking about pregnancy, childbirth, starting a family‚ everyone has an opinion. New parents are bombarded with messages from healthcare experts and professionals, from media and television, from doting friends and family and even from within – each pulling in their own way to influence the decision making process. Where can a mom and dad find the balancing voice?

The Pregnancy Place brings all the voices in pregnancy, childbirth and the first years into one place without judgment, fear or pressure. Hosts and Birth Doulas, Karen Wells and Erica Matteson, bring everything to the table from experts in birthing, practical tips and tools, candid conversations with real moms and dads‚ all in an effort to equip and empower parents to have more satisfying journeys in early parenting.

On The First Episode:

What is a Doula anyway? The Pregnancy Place, on PDX.fm, Channel 2 is hosted by Birth Doulas Karen Wells and Erica Matteson. Join them in their conversations about the benefits and perspectives of Doulas and what they bring to birthing parents‚ perfect launching point for this new show dedicated to being a balanced voice in all things pregnancy.

Download audio

About The Hosts:

Karen Wells has been a Birth Doula and Childbirth Educator for over 10 years. Her passion is giving new moms and dads access to the tools they need to build happy, healthy, thriving families. From an emergency c-section with her first child to a waterbirth at home with her third, Karen has experienced and has learned to appreciate the full spectrum of options in birthing. Her goal is to bring a balancing voice the polarizing effects of differing opinions and encourage parents to find the paths that sooth their families‚ individual needs.

Erica Matteson has worked as a professional birth and postpartum doula for the past ten years, and her goal is to bring families and care providers together in dialog therefore creating better outcomes for the childbearing year. The most empowering thing a mother can feel during childbirth and in those first few weeks of motherhood is to know she has a voice. Being a mother of three boys and experiencing many birth related interventions, Erica can speak to the heart of the matter without being judgmental. She provides information in a non-biased manor allowing each family to find the tools that will support their unique parenting style.

Friday, March 26th, 2010 at 10AM • PDX.FM Channel Two

Completely self-taught (and an adrenaline junkie), Portland designer Michelle DeCourcy had no idea Norah Jones would wear her dress to the Grammys in 2003. It was one moment in a life fueled by passion, boldness and focus. Those same traits were an important part of her recovery from a rare form of Leukemia — and also continues to drive her love of her work, her family and Portland.

Weekdays at 8AM on PDX.FM Channel Two • These are not tools to change you, but rather simply tools to help support your change.

Weekdays at 8AM on PDX.FM Channel Two

Hosted by Todd Williamson • freerangemeditation.pdx.fm

When I close my eyes, I see my childhood in Africa; wild animals, blankets of stars, clear waters full of fish, and me, lying in the arms of a tree swaying gently in the breeze. Nature caught me in her grip early, and the feeling was unmistakable. In later years, when I found myself in more urban settings, I was always looking for ways to find that same feeling – the vastness, the embrace, the unmistakable feeling of being a part of it. It was yoga and meditation that took me there. With each 30 minute session that we share, I hope that I can help you find your own sanctuary amidst the rapid movement of life. There are stars, wild animals and tall trees in our own everyday world. It is my goal to help you sway in the breeze.

Todd lives in Portland, Oregon and is the co-owner of Om Base – organic free range yoga studio with his wife, Vittoria.

Who's now redoing media as we know it here in PDX? What trends should we be paying attention to? Why does it even matter? Hosted by Betsy Richter • Thursdays at 1pm on PDX.FM Channel One

From paperback to Kindle, VHF to TiVo – the way we use media has radically changed over the last few years.

Your mother even has a Netflix account now, while your kids can’t remember a day when you read a paper newspaper. And plenty of people here in PDX are creating without reading a rulebook – in ways that make the old guard shake in their boots.

Who’s now redoing media as we know it here in PDX? What trends should we be paying attention to? Why does it even matter?

I’m Betsy Richter, and I’ve spent years dabbling around the edges of both traditional & new media. I’m an early adopter who’s managed to retain a healthy dose of realism (I think it’s an age thing, frankly). But more importantly, I’ve always been a voracious media consumer – one who sees trends, teachings and/or train wrecks in the experiments to date. And I’m ballsy enough by now to think that I might be able to lead a conversation about just where this whole “media circus” is heading.

Finally, a show that can truly tell the musicians side of the story
Thursdays at 1pm on PDX.FM Channel Two

Hosted by Craig Stewart

Thursdays at 1pm on PDX.FM Channel Two

When his sister was away at college, 15-yr old Craig “borrowed” her nylon-string guitar and never gave it back. Forsaking the fresh, rain-soaked air of his native Salem, OR for his daylight basement bedroom “studio”, Craig spent untold hours in his teens playing guitar, reading album jackets and listening to some hacks: Dylan; Simon and Garfunkel; the Allman Brothers; Carol King; Leo Kotke; Janis Joplin; Elton John; Lightnin’ Hopkins; Sonny Terry, the The Beatles and more.

Now that Craig eats food that doesn’t just come in a can, he has emerged with amazing insight and contacts in the Northwest music scene. You will get to do more than just hear live acoustic music during the show, you will get to hear from the artist who made it sing. This time you get to go Between the Notes.

First guest: Singer/songwriter, Justin Jude, who has performed with national acts like Erin McKeown and Lisa Loeb, as well as West Coast favorites, Stephanie Schneiderman, The Dimes, Scott Fisher and Chris Robley.

Coming soon to iTunes • visit Craig Stewart’s website

Breakfast in Bridgetown interviews Chef and Owner of Nel Centro
Tune in Friday, February 5th at 1:00PM Channel 1 and Channel 2

Breakfast in Bridgetown’s Paul Gerald interviews David Machado about his newest restaurant, Nel Centro at the Hotel Medera in downtown Portland. David is also the owner of Lauro Kitchen and Vindalho.

You can read Paul’s review of Nel Centro at his site, Breakfast in Bridgetown, or hear the interview live
Friday February 5th at 1:00PST.

Machado’s downtown bona fides – earned in the kitchens of Pazzo and Southpark – have evolved and expanded. In his two Eastside restaurants he’s created a distinct culinary sensibility – sophisticated food, friendly knowledgeable service, with neighborhood vibes and prices. The concept, in full flower at Lauro Kitchen and Vindalho, has reinvigorated the neighborhood bistro and this dining model is now headed west, accross the bridge. It’s a short trip but Machado has thrown long. His hope is that Nel Centro, his new venture at the Hotel Modera, will re-energize Portland’s boutique hotel food scene; a scene he had a hand in creating in the 1990′s.

Two decent microphones … two everyday people … one great idea
Debuts Monday, February 1st on PDX.FM Channel Two

Mondays at 12pm on PDX.FM Channel Two

Two decent microphones … two everyday people … one great idea: to take you on an adventure of ideas, sounds and voices intended to stimulate your mind, stretch your imagination, and with a bit of luck, prompt you to examine your beliefs about yourself, other people and the world.

Each week on PDX.fm, the hosts of the Becky and Joe Show, with their guests and contributors, will aim to bring you compelling stories, smart commentary, keen observations and maybe even a few laughs — all with the goal of exploring the common ground we all share.

Becky Bergman and Joe Wilson hope you enjoy their show and that it becomes your show as time goes by. The world continues to change and what was once a one-way medium is swiftly transforming into two-way communication, and then some. Becky and Joe will bring their fair share of thoughts to the marketplace of ideas, but to fully embrace what has been called the new media, they hope you’ll share as well. Have something you want us to talk about? Tell us. Know of something you’d like us to report on? Let us know. We are — aptly for what is mostly an audio format — all ears.

Each book leads readers and walkers on urban excursions of two to six miles, telling the stories of neighborhoods’ geology, human history, and architecture, along with offbeat tidbits ranging from how Native Americans used local plants, to the story behind those glass squares (vault lights) embedded in old city sidewalks.

If variety is the spice of life then we just got a whole lot spicier.
Introducing PDX.FM Channel Two.

During the time we’ve had PDX.FM up and running, all of our shows have been lumped together on one channel. Sports, parenting, reading, smooth jazz music and a lot more. It became apparent to us rather quickly that we needed to have a different home for the more “mild mannered” shows. Thus, PDX.FM Channel 2 was born. Think of it as the more “family” content channel, the place where you might actually learn something, the place that is free of explicit language and content warnings.

Channel 2 launched Monday January 4, 2010 with a new show called The Life Portlandic hosted by Doug Zanger. As he describes it, The Life Portlandic is “an appreciation of Portland, about sharing stories of hops, thanks and optimism…..a daily love letter to the place that we call home”. The show is live every weekday morning at 9AM.

Of course, you will still be seeing some familiar shows on Channel 2 as well. Starting at 11AM every weekday morning, get your daily dose of parenting from Parenting Unplugged Radio. Todd and Laura bring you a series of parenting shows focusing on connecting, educating and supporting parents in their communities in authentic conversation around family and parenting.

We will also continue to bring you shows like Open Book with Diana Page Jordan, Online Recovery Support Radio and the music of Cool Front.

We encourage you to check back often with PDX.FM Channel 2 as the schedule of shows will be growing rapidly. After all, this is Portland, Oregon – one of the most creative places on the planet.

We're preparing for some nifty new stuff. You should probably read this.

Not unlike an addictive but ultimately unhealthy fast food restaurant, we at PDX.FM are always looking for ways to serve you better. We’re secretly preparing for some big announcements throughout January and have had to change some things behind the scenes to make it all happen.

So what does this mean to you?

Not a whole lot – yet. If you listen to PDX.FM using our handy live player or with an iPhone or iPod Touch then you can probably safely disregard this message and go about your day, remaining completely ignorant that we’ve changed anything at all for now. However, if you listen with your own player (iTunes, Windows Media Player, etc.) or use a stream player on your mobile device (Androids and BlackBerrys in particular) then you’ll need to take a few seconds and follow these instructions…

Step One: Delete whatever stream file you’ve been using to connect to PDX.FM – it will no longer work. So, if you’re in iTunes, just right click and delete it – same with Windows Media Player. If you’re using software on a mobile device to hear us, StreamFurious on Android for example, you’ll need to do the same.

Step Two (if you’re on a desktop/notebook computer): Go to www.pdx.fm and take a peek at the toolbar at the top of the site. Click the icon for the player software you want to use and your computer (Mac or PC) will download a file. Double click that file and you’re good to go.

Step Two (if you’re on a mobile device): Go to www.pdx.fm/mobile and press “play” – your device/phone will either start playing the stream (in which case you’re already done here) or ask which application you want to use to play the stream. Simply select an application. In most cases this should be all you need to do. If your phone does not currently contain a compatible stream player, we recommend heading to your app store of choice and downloading one. For Android phones we HIGHLY recommend StreamFurious – it’s fast, free, and very easy to use. For BlackBerry, it depends quite a bit on which version of the OS you have – email us at contact@pdx.fm with your phone model and we’ll help you out. We’re working to get this streamlined a bit more but RIMM isn’t exactly making this easy on us. Sorry.

Why the change?

You’ll just have to wait and see…

Finally - answers to some very commonly asked questions...

October was our first full month of full-time broadcasting and podcasting here at PDX.FM, and our first real hurdle as a start-up. We’ve been bombarded with a lot of the same questions in our email inboxes so we thought it was about time we gave some answers…

Q: Why are only about half of your shows are available on iTunes?

A: We’re working on it. Really. We are. Honest. As of this writing we’re waiting for iTunes to approve (or in some cases re-approve) quite a few shows including Rip City Radio, Clairvoyant Connection, Ready Radio, Breakfast in Bridgetown, and more. At the same time, we’re also trying to ascertain the best way to provide podcasts of our various music shows, which means wading through a lot of legalese related to rights and royalties – we’ll get there, it’ll just take some time.

Q: Is there a way to subscribe to all of the PDX.FM shows instead of having to subscribe to each show individually?

A: No. Would you really want to? Who has time to listen to all of them? I don’t think anyone here even listens to all of them.

Q: I read somewhere about a show called (insert name of show here) but I don’t see it on the schedule, where is it?

A: Just prior to the launch of PDX.FM, Oregon Media Central gave us a little more free publicity than we asked for and, as a result, a few shows in development were made public long before they really should have been. All of the shows in question are still in the works and will be making their debuts before the end of the year. (And for what it’s worth, we do thank OMC for the coverage – it kept us from being lazy)

Q: I don’t own an iPhone or iPod Touch, do you have any plans to provide support for other mobile devices?

A: Definitely. Again, we’re a small company so we either need to purchase phones ourselves to do testing with or we have to rely on others to help us out – both of which make things a little difficult until people start volunteering their time (hint). At the moment though we are currently working on BlackBerry support, we hope to have that in place by the end of November.

Q: I have a show idea, who do I talk to?

A: Your best bet is to send it to contact@pdx.fm. Be both creative and descriptive. Try to include an outline of the first several episodes of your proposed show. We’re looking for uncommon people who are passionate about uncommon topics – and we prefer those topics to be at least somewhat Portland related. This isn’t traditional terrestrial radio and we’re typically not interested in having you come in and play long sets of music with two minutes of pandering talk in between.

At the time, we were experimenting with different stream qualities, hoping that you’d give us feedback about dropped audio or sound quality. Wow, were we selling ourselves short. In just two weeks time we realized that about half of our listeners are now using an iPhone or iPod Touch to listen to our shows and the response has been nothing short of amazing. Not a single day has gone by without some suggestions and, while we’re still working to integrate a lot of them, we’re happy to announce that we’ve launched an all-new mini-site for our Apple loving mobile listeners.

So what’s new?

For starters, we’ve boosted the stream to 64k vs. the 48k we started out with. A lot of you are still using first generation iPhones with EDGE connections and apparently most of you are able to listen to 64k without a hitch in most areas – this is great news for us because while 64k still isn’t optimal for music, it’s more than enough for most talk show programming.

Second, we’ve added some of the necessities like a daily show schedule, a news page, and the ability to run contests and promotions exclusively to our mobile listeners. We’ve also added a spot for some unobtrusive advertising so we can pay a bill or two on our end.

Finally, we’ve added the ability to get most of your favorite shows in podcast form directly from iTunes without having to scour through the iTunes store. Miss a show? Touch an icon and download it directly to your iPhone or iPod Touch as soon as it becomes available. We’ve received hundreds of emails about this so we’re glad to be able to accommodate.

Is it an app?

No. We decided early on that we wanted to give our listeners the ability to use the rest of their iPhone or iPod Touch while listening to our shows and didn’t want anyone to have to download an app to do so. Instead, we’re using the built-in stream features of Quicktime – available with the iPhone 3.0 update. Using Apple’s proven streaming technology you can listen to pdx.fm without having to hunt for an app, install it onto your phone, and have to keep it active through our shows. Go ahead, play a game while listening to iPhoneSlutz. WeHeart Radio too but it seems pretty stupid to have to download an app and keep it updated just to listen to streaming audio.

More to come…

We received a lot of great ideas and what we’ve put together so far is just the beginning. Not many people realize that the core of pdx.fm consists of four people – putting together shows, scheduling guests, running websites, working on different ways to deliver content, throwing bacon parties… We appreciate your ideas and your patience, keep ‘em coming.

As always, send your thoughts, problems, suggestions, bugs, etc. to contact@pdx.fm
