USL Portland Timbers take on The Seattle Sounders FC in the Emerald City for a “friendly” pre-season training match. This is likely to be the only “friendly” match with the Sounders this year. The next time we see them the Portland Timbers will be MLS and we will be playing them toe to toe.

This Thursday March 11th, 4 packed busses holding Timber fans (including our own Sabrina Miller), will caravan up to Seattle to help support our Portland Timbers. With an awesome rate for a match ticket and a bus ride, we will be taking over the North End of Qwest stadium. If you haven’t secured your ticket for the game, there are only a few left. Head to TimbersArmy.org for more information.

Proceeds from the match will benefit the Sounders four community partners: Boys and Girls Club of Washington State, Save the Children, Seattle SCORES and Washington Youth Soccer.

Betsy Richter talks live with the News Editor at The Portland Mercury
Thursday March 11th at 1pm.

From Betsy Richter / redoingmedia.com…

Join me this Thursday, March 11th at 1 pm for this week’s edition of Redoing Media. I’m veering from the usual format (designed to accomodate the day job) to broadcast live from the pdx.fm studios. And my guest this week?

None other than Matt Davis, News Editor of the Portland Mercury. Matt, who also shares his POV on both his personal blog — Matt Davis Opens His Mouth — and on Twitter (as @mattdavis999), is known as a fearless & outspoken critic of Portland’s current Police Bureau practices, among others.

I’ll be talking with him about that quote above & how it may apply the state of journalism here in Portland right now. Where are we? Where do we need to go? How are we going to get there? And since Matt’s got that firebrand reputation working for him, I’m sure we’ll hear plenty about how PDX media producers just aren’t rising to the challenge…!

Join us at 1 pm on Thursday, won’t you? (I may even have the chat box up and working by then…)

To celebrate Portland’s rightful place in the pantheon of the country’s very best sandwiches, The Life Portlandic is pleased to announce a photo contest...

I believe that Portland is currently the best sandwich city in the country. Period.

To wit, I used to make (the best) hoagies and cheesesteaks outside of Philly during my college summers. I’ve tasted some of the best New York City has to offer. I’ve tried Carolina pulled pork on soft white rolls. Gorged myself silly on Lobster Rolls in Massachusetts. Been lucky to try sandwiches from all around the land.
And they are all amateur hour compared to what we have in Portland.

To celebrate Portland’s rightful place in the pantheon of the country’s very best, The Life Portlandic is pleased to announce a photo contest for the month of March:

It’s the Sandwich City USA Photo Contest.

Yes, we are stealing a page out of the Breakfast in Bridgetown and Hike Yeah playbooks, but nothing says “I love Portland sandwiches” more than sharing with all of us.

Here are the rules:

1) Order a sandwich. It could be an old favorite or a new friend.

2) Snap a picture BEFORE you take your first bite. (I know, your mouth will be watering, but please try your best.)

3) Send it to us at tlpdx@me.com with the sandwich name, a short description of the aforementioned sandwich and where you bought it. You may be as basic or effusive as you like but bear in mind that creativity helps immensely here.

We will post the sandwich photos on our site and choose the one that looks the tastiest and has the best description.

The winner will receive a $25 gift card to the Portland sandwich place of their choice.

So, get your gorge on and celebrate the beauty of Sandwich City USA!

Local Birth Doulas bring all the voices in pregnancy, childbirth and the first years into one place without judgment, fear or pressure.

Starts Tuesday March 9th at Noon on PDX.FM Channel Two

Hosted by Karen Wells & Erica Matteson

When talking about pregnancy, childbirth, starting a family‚ everyone has an opinion. New parents are bombarded with messages from healthcare experts and professionals, from media and television, from doting friends and family and even from within – each pulling in their own way to influence the decision making process. Where can a mom and dad find the balancing voice?

The Pregnancy Place brings all the voices in pregnancy, childbirth and the first years into one place without judgment, fear or pressure. Hosts and Birth Doulas, Karen Wells and Erica Matteson, bring everything to the table from experts in birthing, practical tips and tools, candid conversations with real moms and dads‚ all in an effort to equip and empower parents to have more satisfying journeys in early parenting.

On The First Episode:

What is a Doula anyway? The Pregnancy Place, on PDX.fm, Channel 2 is hosted by Birth Doulas Karen Wells and Erica Matteson. Join them in their conversations about the benefits and perspectives of Doulas and what they bring to birthing parents‚ perfect launching point for this new show dedicated to being a balanced voice in all things pregnancy.

Download audio

About The Hosts:

Karen Wells has been a Birth Doula and Childbirth Educator for over 10 years. Her passion is giving new moms and dads access to the tools they need to build happy, healthy, thriving families. From an emergency c-section with her first child to a waterbirth at home with her third, Karen has experienced and has learned to appreciate the full spectrum of options in birthing. Her goal is to bring a balancing voice the polarizing effects of differing opinions and encourage parents to find the paths that sooth their families‚ individual needs.

Erica Matteson has worked as a professional birth and postpartum doula for the past ten years, and her goal is to bring families and care providers together in dialog therefore creating better outcomes for the childbearing year. The most empowering thing a mother can feel during childbirth and in those first few weeks of motherhood is to know she has a voice. Being a mother of three boys and experiencing many birth related interventions, Erica can speak to the heart of the matter without being judgmental. She provides information in a non-biased manor allowing each family to find the tools that will support their unique parenting style.

Mt Tabor Theater
4811 SE Hawthorne Blvd.
Portland, OR
taborpdx.com

When: Thursday, March 4th at 7pm

Who: Will Radik, Dr. Normal, and RobertWagner

Featured Movie:

Hawk the Slayer (1980)
Hawk the Slayer, after seeing both his father and bride die at the hands of his malevolent brother, Voltan, sets out for revenge and the chance to live up to his title. Tooling himself up with the “mind-sword” and recruiting a motley band of warriors: a giant, a dwarf, a one-armed man with a machine-crossbow and an elf with the fastest bow in the land; Hawk leads the battle against Voltan to free the land from the forces of evil and avenge his loved ones.

About 7th Planet Picture Show

7th Planet PIcture Show is an MST3K-inspired live celebration of cinematic camp, taking place twice a month at the Mt. Tabor Theater in Portland, Oregon. Will Radik and 2 or more hardened camp cinema veterans will face down some of the most ridiculous, awkward, and tasteless films born unto this pitiless earth, with only microphones (and probably alcohol). Audience members are not only allowed but encouraged to shout at the movie themselves and leave their cell phones on.

Though the live commentary is the heart of the show, it doesn’t stop there. At the end of the film, audiences may want to mill around the luxurious and dark Mt. Tabor lounge, perhaps discussing the finer points of the cinematic piece they’ve just viewed. At this point, Will may show clips or behind the scenes footage pertaining to the film, ridiculous clips of just about anything else, trailers, or even another movie. Beyond the main film and commentary, 7th Planet Picture Show is, well, like a bo-. Never mind.

Did I mention there’s a bar right in the back of the lounge where the movies are shown? Well, there is. You can even watch it from a barstool. Isn’t that grand?

7pm, 21 and Over, Free Admission. Suggested donation $5 (entirely optional)

Friday, March 26th, 2010 at 10AM • PDX.FM Channel Two

Completely self-taught (and an adrenaline junkie), Portland designer Michelle DeCourcy had no idea Norah Jones would wear her dress to the Grammys in 2003. It was one moment in a life fueled by passion, boldness and focus. Those same traits were an important part of her recovery from a rare form of Leukemia — and also continues to drive her love of her work, her family and Portland.

30 people. 30 hours. Over 1,000 servings of beer.
What could possibly go wrong?

We love 30 Hour Day. Who didn’t? All that Portland do-goodery wrapped in a nice live, streaming telethon. We’re already looking forward to the next one.

Then we had an idea. What if, instead of a 30 hour telethon, we did a 30 hour marathon? And how do we make that marathon scream “Portland” in big bold letters?

Introducing 30 Hour Drunk

30 people. 30 hours. Over 1,000 servings of beer.

All of it live on PDX.FM and all of it captured on HD video.

A once in a lifetime event, because who in their right mind would want to do it twice?

Friday, April 16th, 2010 starting at 4pm

Details and registration information coming soon.

Weekdays at 8AM on PDX.FM Channel Two • These are not tools to change you, but rather simply tools to help support your change.

Weekdays at 8AM on PDX.FM Channel Two

Hosted by Todd Williamson • freerangemeditation.pdx.fm

When I close my eyes, I see my childhood in Africa; wild animals, blankets of stars, clear waters full of fish, and me, lying in the arms of a tree swaying gently in the breeze. Nature caught me in her grip early, and the feeling was unmistakable. In later years, when I found myself in more urban settings, I was always looking for ways to find that same feeling – the vastness, the embrace, the unmistakable feeling of being a part of it. It was yoga and meditation that took me there. With each 30 minute session that we share, I hope that I can help you find your own sanctuary amidst the rapid movement of life. There are stars, wild animals and tall trees in our own everyday world. It is my goal to help you sway in the breeze.

Todd lives in Portland, Oregon and is the co-owner of Om Base – organic free range yoga studio with his wife, Vittoria.

Join us right here on Thursday, Feb. 18th at 7:00AM to find out just how seriously we take our (ahem) craft, as PDX.FM's own RobertWagner live blogs for almost* the entire day.

10:15PM - A few more beverages and I’m spent for the night. I have to be up and alert for what is probably the longest (ahem) “broadcast” day of my (ahem) “career” tomorrow in which I will be (ahem) “on air” for no fewer than 7 hours during the course of the day. If you aren’t tired of me yet, you soon will be.

7:30PM - A light crowd at first for the 7th Planet Picture Show but pretty full by the time the movie is over. Jay Mackin is a natural for this sort of thing and manages to steer clear of excessive dead celebrity jokes this time.

6:45PM – Hanging out with Dave, the new owner from Mt. Tabor, he’s a pretty cool guy. Alex from Hike Yeah shows up and we drink beer and proceed to talk about the Android dev kit, Mac vs. Windows API’s, and … everything except hiking pretty much.

6:00PM - Trying out this new “bus” thing that everyone keeps talking about so that I can get over to the Mt. Tabor Theater for the 7th Planet Picture Show. Apparently you need something called “exact change”, I don’t have that so I walk instead… and walk… and walk…

5:00PM – Locking up and leaving. Wow, what a stressful and taxing day. Be sure to check back here tomorrow and I’ll (not)live blog the evening – retroactively. Oh yeah, and tune in tomorrow morning at 8AM for double the Portland Sucks fun as we talk to Nathaniel Boggess about Entertainment For People at 8AM and Erica from Red Light Clothing about the Naked Shopping Spree at 9AM.

4:57PM - The last show of the day is over and that means it’s beer time. Unfortunately, I don’t think there’s any left… #blerg. Time to head out for a meeting with Alex from Hike Yeah at 6:30 and then off to the 7th Planet Picture Show at 7:00pm and then… well… who knows? Let’s see, that’ll take me to somewhere around 9:00 to 9:30pm – that’s about a 14 hour work day – I think I’ll mark that down for some overtime.

4:39PM – Slowly realizing that Love in the Dump Chute would make a great drinking game – today’s word is “bang”.

4:24PM – Arguing with Sabrina “Fatboy” Miller about whether or not men can wear an excessive amount of jewelry or not. She’s accused me of overdoing it today. Sabrina’s method of “arguing” pretty much consists of making a statement and then burying herself in work, pretending that she doesn’t hear my rebuttal. She lies. She hears me. She just doesn’t find this to be a fun game and doesn’t want to play anymore.

4:19PM – Oh yeah, Studio Cat won.

Studio Cat

4:14PM – There are few things more disturbing in life than wondering what that smell is and realizing that it’s you.

4:08PM – Battle Royale: February 2010! Studio Cat vs. Perpetually Running Toilet vs. RobertWagner! And now… posting today’s podcasts and going over plans for the evening hours while listening to Love in the Dump Chute

3:50PM – Nerd Report Radio guests – CosPlayers: Scott, Meg, and…. well… Meg’s sister

3:24PM - Finally back at the PDX.FM studios. Walked in on The Nerd Report, already in progress. I can’t remember what the topic of the day is – something to do with costumes or something… UPDATE: CosPlay! Yeah, that’s what it is… Now I remember.

2:42PM - Wow, it’s an all-star cast at Big Ass Sandwiches today… Just as I’m leaving, Doug Zanger – man of a million PDX.FM broadcasts – shows up. Still a Big Ass Virgin, he’s game to try a Big Ass Ham Sandwich.

2:35PM - Badazzmofo David Walker is here now… and he has a wicked cool Spiderman hat. I can’t rock a Spiderman hat, I’m unworthy of such things.

2:29PM – Stopped by Big Ass Sandwiches and got a free Mexi-Coke (thanks!) and witnessed a wicked cool demo of a credit card processing iPhone app while enjoying a shot of their Au Jus (yes, a SHOT of their Au Jus) – I could sit here all day and drink this stuff, it’s like liquid roast beef.

2:22PM - Went to try to get Voodoo Doughnuts for the rest of the crew – not sure if Fatboy Miller has ever seen the penis doughnut or not… The line is WAY too long for my feable attention span though. Bummer.

2:09PM - I think I was just accidentally rude to someone. I feel like a dick now.

1:58PM – Someone please inform the Android Wordpress plugin people to fix their permalink function, this wee little oversight makes it rather difficult to live blog with my Droid… #liveblogfail

1:48PM – Seriously, listen to Betsy Richter’s voice while playing Can I Sit Next To You? By AC/DC… yeah… ohhhh yeah.

1:41PM – Getting mail and cutting (not shredding) cheese down on 3rd Ave. Enjoy! That must be my bottled margarita coming back to haunt us.

1:25PM – no officer, I don’t need assistance. I’m just doing my best impression of those old ipod commercials… I’m sorry its not to your liking. I will do better next time.

1:04PM – Wow… I’ve never noticed how… uhhh… sultry… Betsy Richter’s voice is. Again… wow. Taking a quick 45 minute break from blogging to go run errands. Sorry. Unavoidable. Besides, I want to hear this without thinking about blogging.

12:56PM - Getting ready to listen to the WORLD PREMIERE of Betsy Richter’s new show here on the PDX.FM called “Redoing Media”… If anyone around these parts had clue number one about media and how to redo it, well, it’d be Betsy.

12:43PM - Discussing the possibility of a PDX.FM Volleyball team… because I’m a absolutely badass volleyball player, especially when tightly wrapped in highly-binding short shorts.

12:34PM - Apparently Emily thinks Empire Labs is in the food business… which I guess they sort of are sometimes if you count the chocolate Clone-a-Willy… Otherwise, I don’t think this idea would really work.

12:31PM – Lunch is delicious… Finding out that somebody doesn’t know when to quit fucking up their website is not. And no, I’m not going to fix it, we already had that conversation and YOU said “your web guy” would “take care of everything”… Nice. How’d that work out for you?

12:10PM – Lunch! Dosariks…. or however you spell it.

11:56AM – Playing a song by Blood Eagle that features the terms “Chicken McNuggets” and “Fish Filet” – Blood Eagle will be performing at Zombotica next month. Yay. That makes me happy.

11:46AM – Holding a neck vain popping contest to see who has the most defined neck vains whilst emulating a professional wrestler. I think I would have won except I hurt myself. Unfortunately Sabrina doesn’t understand how to use my camera…

11:40AM – Chatty chatbox on FML Radio today. No, I will only play ONE song by The Doors – ever. If you don’t want to hear that ONE song by The Doors that I can actually tolerate then you’re shit out of luck, sorry. There are plenty of “ahem” classic rock options out there… Pick one.

11:29AM - Fatboys Roberts and Miller…

Fatboys Miller & Roberts

11:07AM - Getting ready for FML Radio…

10:59AM – Playing football (or soccer if you’re not from Portland) with dog poop. I didn’t win.

Poop... or makeshift sporting goods?

10:52AM - …The cleaning lady… her and I don’t get along.

10:46AM - The cleaning woman here is slowly driving me insane. I swear, she waits for me to get on the phone and then cranks on the vacuum cleaner so that I can’t hear. I can SEE her, waiting for me to say something and then POW, clicks the thing on. Next she’s start hosing everything in sight down with disinfectant foot spray because apparently we are rather germy.

10:28AM - Oooooh! Conference call is all about things that are better than sex – like coding and logic and cruise ships! They damn well better be, I’m missing a Byron Beck episode and I won’t have time to listen to it now until tomorrow. Meanwhile, Emily appears to be crashing from a lack of caffeine now that I’ve successfully stolen her morning supply.

10:13AM - I see that Fatboy Miller is leading The Oregonian peeps back upstairs to watch the Fatboy Roberts show. It doesn’t look like Byron brought any food to leave behind this time, that makes me sad…. and hungry.

10:09AM - …And off the live blog for a few minutes while I attempt to calm down and sit in on a conference call.

10:04AM - Fueled by almost an entire NOS Grape that I downed in less than 10 minutes, I beat the crap out of Emily Gibson in an impromptu hopping contest outside. No one can out hop me these days. No one.

09:56AM – Heading down to let Cort, Fatboy, and Byron Beck into the studio… Oregonian folks in hot pursuit

9:41AM - Trying out the grape NOS, cut with Mountain Dew – ok by itself, tastes like anal discharge when mixed with Mountain Dew

9:16AM – Ahhh, the morning’s first liquid through the nose was …. Yoohoo. Laughs at the expense of Gresham, which, according to Emily Gibson, is one of the southern states.

9:12AM - A conversation about “rod riding” with Emily Gibson ensues, “rod riding” of course is the hard-to-master art of riding a bicycle without a seat.

9:06AM - Today’s Meat Show features the all new Grape Flavored NOS – containing 343mg of caffeine that no one here really needs.

8:06AM - Ladies and Gentlemen, Fatboy Miller…

7:56AM – Live blogging comes to a grinding halt here for about 45 minutes as we get ready to go live at 8am on channel one…

7:36AM - Well that was pointless, no gems to be had there today…

7:34AM - I should probably start thinking about today’s Portland Sucks show and getting some notes together… When you need inspiration, look no further than the regions most inspirational ultramega-megastar, Daniel Baldwin…

7:14AM - Sabrina Miller begins her day by frantically cleaning every horizontal surface in sight. Initially I’m confused, then she reminds me that The Oregonian is sending a photographer over here today. I wonder if they’ll let me take pictures of the photographer taking pictures? Photographers almost never get their pictures taken unless it’s for that cliché shot that they all have in their bios… You know, the one where they’re facing left and snapping an important shot of something you can’t see.

6:51AM - Good morning Portland…

The view from the PDX.FM studio.

6:14AM - Coffee time at the Starbucks at 9th and Park. It’s my lame excuse to use Foursquare to be “mayor” so I do a quick check-in. If only I checked in every time I walked through the door here, I’d probably be mayor for life, but I forget half the time

5:43AM - Checking email. There’s a vague email from Jay Mackin. Turns out there won’t be a Unibash Radio today. Jay is always a little over apologetic about these things, which is sort of unnecessary, it’s not like he’s on the payroll or anything like that, we’re just happy to have him because he makes us laugh. The downside to this of course is that it forces us to do a slightly longer Portland Sucks show and no one wants that.

5:07AM – I wake up. See? It’s already exciting.

What’s this all about?

Have you ever wanted to know what goes on behind the scenes at PDX.FM? No? Well, we’re going to tell you anyway.

Every day we get at least a couple of resumes from silly, naive folks wanting to work at PDX.FM who figure this is all just fun and games – well, it is, and we want to share it.

Join us right here on Thursday, Feb. 18th at 7:00AM to find out just how seriously we take our (ahem) craft, as PDX.FM’s own RobertWagner live blogs for an almost* the entire day.

*live blogging during the Portland Sucks show WILL be limited as RW can only do so much multitasking.

The Annual, Co-Ed, Naked Shopping Spree at The Red Light • February 21st at 5pm

Get Naked, Win Clothes:
Annual, Co-Ed, Naked Shopping Spree at The Red Light

Portland, OR – The Red Light Clothing Exchange, Portland’s celebrated buy-sell-trade men’s and women’s fashion emporium, will host their popular, annual Co-Ed Naked Shopping Spree on Sunday, February 21. Four contestants (2 male, 2 female) will strip down to nothing at 5 pm, then have three minutes to run through the 7500 sq. ft. store – in front a cheering crowd — and put on as many clothes as possible. Whoever pulls on the most garments wins everything on their body plus a $100 Red Light gift card. (Prizes will also be given to first, second, and third runners up.)

All customers over 18 who spend $20 or more at The Red Light between now and Feb. 12 are eligible to enter the drawing to compete in the Shopping Spree. So far, more than 60 people are entered. According to General Manager Ryan White, “some people are shy, but this is Portland. A lot of people are excited about the opportunity to run around naked in public. And to win a lot of clothes.”

Live music by local bands kicks off the in-store event beginning at 2 pm, and door prizes will be awarded throughout the afternoon. The Naked Shopping Spree begins at 5 pm. The public is encouraged to come and watch the event in-store and cheer on the competitors; the last Naked Shopping Spree attracted over 100 onlookers. The Red Light anticipates a bigger audience this year because, according to White, public interest in the event is higher than ever. “People are coming in everyday and asking about it. People are looking for cheap ways to have fun, and that’s what our Naked Shopping Spree is. It’s also a very ‘local’, very Red Light thing – you’ll never see an event like this happening at a chain store like Forever 21.”

Started in 1999, The Red Light Clothing Exchange is one of Portland’s most prominent independent businesses. It has been featured in numerous national and international media; it was named by GQ as one of the 100 best independent shops in the country and dubbed by Lucky as their favorite shopping destination in the city.

Who's now redoing media as we know it here in PDX? What trends should we be paying attention to? Why does it even matter? Hosted by Betsy Richter • Thursdays at 1pm on PDX.FM Channel One

From paperback to Kindle, VHF to TiVo – the way we use media has radically changed over the last few years.

Your mother even has a Netflix account now, while your kids can’t remember a day when you read a paper newspaper. And plenty of people here in PDX are creating without reading a rulebook – in ways that make the old guard shake in their boots.

Who’s now redoing media as we know it here in PDX? What trends should we be paying attention to? Why does it even matter?

I’m Betsy Richter, and I’ve spent years dabbling around the edges of both traditional & new media. I’m an early adopter who’s managed to retain a healthy dose of realism (I think it’s an age thing, frankly). But more importantly, I’ve always been a voracious media consumer – one who sees trends, teachings and/or train wrecks in the experiments to date. And I’m ballsy enough by now to think that I might be able to lead a conversation about just where this whole “media circus” is heading.

Finally, a show that can truly tell the musicians side of the story
Thursdays at 1pm on PDX.FM Channel Two

Hosted by Craig Stewart

Thursdays at 1pm on PDX.FM Channel Two

When his sister was away at college, 15-yr old Craig “borrowed” her nylon-string guitar and never gave it back. Forsaking the fresh, rain-soaked air of his native Salem, OR for his daylight basement bedroom “studio”, Craig spent untold hours in his teens playing guitar, reading album jackets and listening to some hacks: Dylan; Simon and Garfunkel; the Allman Brothers; Carol King; Leo Kotke; Janis Joplin; Elton John; Lightnin’ Hopkins; Sonny Terry, the The Beatles and more.

Now that Craig eats food that doesn’t just come in a can, he has emerged with amazing insight and contacts in the Northwest music scene. You will get to do more than just hear live acoustic music during the show, you will get to hear from the artist who made it sing. This time you get to go Between the Notes.

First guest: Singer/songwriter, Justin Jude, who has performed with national acts like Erin McKeown and Lisa Loeb, as well as West Coast favorites, Stephanie Schneiderman, The Dimes, Scott Fisher and Chris Robley.

Coming soon to iTunes • visit Craig Stewart’s website

Weekdays at 10AM on PDX.FM Channel Two

Exceptional Women NW is a daily exploration of achievement, led by women, in Portland, the state of Oregon and the Pacific Northwest. Upcoming guests include Shauna Parsons of KPTV, Michelle DeCourcy, nationally-reknowned fashion designer and Jeanna Frazzini of Basic Rights Oregon and many more.

“There are plenty of stories about women doing exceptional things in our city, state and region,” said Doug Zanger, the creator and current host of the show. “It been a long-time dream of mine to find these stories and share them in a forum that is both inspirational and aspirational.” Female leaders in business & social causes, entrepreneurs, writers, bloggers, artists, designers, free spirits — any woman — anywhere in our area, making a positive impact, are the subjects of these 30-minute conversations and celebrations of hope and success from all walks of life.

Come honor the life of The Swayze by watching him in one of the most ridiculously cheesy, questionably masculine and often unintentionally funny action flicks of the 80s. For god sakes, it’s Patrick Swayze. Are you really gong to tell me there is something better happening in this town than an hour an a half of a shirtless and mulleted Swayze dance fighting to Jeff Healey music? Because I can promise you, there is not.

Tell your friends, so long as those friends are 21 or older. Three bucks gets you into a movie that you can only see these days on TBS late at night, censored and cut for commercials. But NOT at the Bagdad.

And if you want to bring a Ouija board in an attempt to summon the spirit of Patrick Swayze, who are we to stop you?

We’ve said it before. We’re new at all of this.

One of the most frequent requests we get here at PDX.FM is that we post a larger program schedule that gives our listeners one of those fancy “at a glance” views of what’s coming up instead of just the daily schedule on the sidebar of the site.

Currently, the PDX.FM show line up is changing pretty rapidly across both channels and we’re constantly looking to add new shows that we think you might be interested in. We’re a small operation and we’re working with a lot of people that have day jobs so it hasn’t been prudent to create a month long schedule just yet because sometimes things change week to week, and sometimes the schedules change in the middle of the day (we do what we can to avoid it but it happens).

Rest assured though, we’re working on it.

By Doug Zanger

I’m not exactly sure when (or why) I decided to sign up for the Portland Timbers open tryout. It was most likely, a quick, “why the heck not” kind of thing. But, it actually did fall in to the theme of my 2010 resolutions: try a few new things here and there.

This would qualify as something new for sure.

Friday night, I got my bag ready. There was Gatorade, water, some bandages for my feet (I tend to blister), energy bars and a bunch of changes of clothes. I was probably more ready to take a hike with Alex from Hike Yeah as opposed to getting out on the pitch for a couple of days of soccer.

As I arrived Saturday morning, it was pretty much as I had expected: a bunch of younger guys. Being 40, I was clearly the oldest one there. I met a few guys who were in their 30s, but most were in their 20s — and in their soccer prime. As we were warming up and stretching, I made a “don’t ever get old” comment to a young fella from B.C. who had come down for the weekend. He asked how old I was. When I told him I was 40 he said, “no way! I thought you were like, 27 or something.”

That was the little boost of energy I needed to get going. You can imagine the smile after that comment.

The first short-sided game was uneventful. We were all just getting our legs under ourselves. I was on a great team with some very good players. What encouraged me, though, was just how nice everyone was. They were incredibly supportive every step of the way. This was a highly competitive environment yet it proved to me, once again, that soccer is an amazing community.

The second match was much better.

Near the end of play, I was up front and a ball ended up bounding high over my head about 15 yards out. I had only one choice: take the shot. The ball arced high over my right shoulder, I turned towards the goal waited until the ball got around my chest and wound up to take the shot. I caught that thing square, put all kinds of mustard and spin on it and put it in the lower right side of the net. The goalie (who was really good) got a finger on it, but it was about as perfect a shot as I could have asked for. Now, I’ve had some pretty good goals in my career — but this was probably one of the best.

After the final whistle, I grabbed my iPhone to tweet about it. Coach Amos Magee of the Timbers, who ran everything, said, with a big smile, “ don’t forget to tell them about the goal.” It was my second of glory and I wasn’t going to miss sharing it.

The rest of the day was relatively uneventful. The 11 v. 11 games were fun, but I didn’t quite get in to the flow. I didn’t pay poorly, but I couldn’t replicate the magic of that first goal. On Sunday, sore and tired, I played a bit in the first match then decided that this 40-year old body had had enough. I walked to Coach Magee and told him that I was done for the weekend. After saying how pleased he was that I had come out to give it a go, he said, “we’re all still talking about that goal from yesterday. It was great.” And that’s all I needed to hear to consider my first (and likely last) Portland Timbers tryout a rousing success.

I’d first like to thank everyone who encouraged me on Twitter. I am pleased that you all were supporting an “old man” trying to live the “glory days” a bit. I’d also like to thank all of the players I met over the weekend. Some had traveled as far as France, B.C. and Tacoma to be there. I enjoyed my brief chats with everyone and wish those who make it to the next round of tryouts the best of luck (be on the lookout for a kid from France potentially making the squad — one of the best players I have ever seen).

Most importantly, though, I’d like to thank the Portland Timbers, the coaching staff and especially Coach Amos Magee. The entire weekend was run extremely well and everyone was treated with respect, dignity and class — all of the earmarks of the sport all of us love so much.

Having been “behind the curtain” a little bit I can say, without question, that we are very lucky to have such a great team and organization here. Everything, from top to bottom, is run extraordinarily well and they represent our city and the sport of soccer better than any of us could even imagine. I know I’m looking forward to the season and MLS in 2010.

And I’m hoping that one or two of the guys from this weekend make the squad and get a chance to be part of it all.

Breakfast in Bridgetown interviews Chef and Owner of Nel Centro
Tune in Friday, February 5th at 1:00PM Channel 1 and Channel 2

Breakfast in Bridgetown’s Paul Gerald interviews David Machado about his newest restaurant, Nel Centro at the Hotel Medera in downtown Portland. David is also the owner of Lauro Kitchen and Vindalho.

You can read Paul’s review of Nel Centro at his site, Breakfast in Bridgetown, or hear the interview live
Friday February 5th at 1:00PST.

Machado’s downtown bona fides – earned in the kitchens of Pazzo and Southpark – have evolved and expanded. In his two Eastside restaurants he’s created a distinct culinary sensibility – sophisticated food, friendly knowledgeable service, with neighborhood vibes and prices. The concept, in full flower at Lauro Kitchen and Vindalho, has reinvigorated the neighborhood bistro and this dining model is now headed west, accross the bridge. It’s a short trip but Machado has thrown long. His hope is that Nel Centro, his new venture at the Hotel Modera, will re-energize Portland’s boutique hotel food scene; a scene he had a hand in creating in the 1990’s.

Two decent microphones … two everyday people … one great idea
Debuts Monday, February 1st on PDX.FM Channel Two

Mondays at 12pm on PDX.FM Channel Two

Two decent microphones … two everyday people … one great idea: to take you on an adventure of ideas, sounds and voices intended to stimulate your mind, stretch your imagination, and with a bit of luck, prompt you to examine your beliefs about yourself, other people and the world.

Each week on PDX.fm, the hosts of the Becky and Joe Show, with their guests and contributors, will aim to bring you compelling stories, smart commentary, keen observations and maybe even a few laughs — all with the goal of exploring the common ground we all share.

Becky Bergman and Joe Wilson hope you enjoy their show and that it becomes your show as time goes by. The world continues to change and what was once a one-way medium is swiftly transforming into two-way communication, and then some. Becky and Joe will bring their fair share of thoughts to the marketplace of ideas, but to fully embrace what has been called the new media, they hope you’ll share as well. Have something you want us to talk about? Tell us. Know of something you’d like us to report on? Let us know. We are — aptly for what is mostly an audio format — all ears.

Each book leads readers and walkers on urban excursions of two to six miles, telling the stories of neighborhoods’ geology, human history, and architecture, along with offbeat tidbits ranging from how Native Americans used local plants, to the story behind those glass squares (vault lights) embedded in old city sidewalks.

This Week on This Week In Social Media…

Hosted by PJA • agencypja.com

Yelp announced “check-in” functionality this week, effectively competing with Foursquare. You can follow people on LinkedIn, and update your status on pretty much any social network. As the major networks race to adopt and co-opt each other’s best features, they are giving us a glimpse into the future of social networking: a future defined less by destination networks and more by broadly shared social behaviors across the Web. Join Mike O’Toole and special guest Shiv Singh, Vice President and Global Social Media Lead at Razorfish and author of “Social Media Marketing for Dummies,” as they discuss what these trends mean for consumers and the marketers trying to reach them.

This Week in Social Media airs every Thursday at 12pm Pacific, 3pm Eastern – on PDX.FM Channel Two. For more information, visit pdx.fm/twism

Can you believe it’s been two months since the last Hike Yeah Photo Contest? Well, here’s another chance to show off your pictures and win a cool prize.

The topic time this around is urban hiking/walking: city views that you can twalk to, city parks you can walk through, etc. As usual, this is open to interpretation; be creative. Laura Foster, author of numerous books about urban hikes/walks, will be my guest on January 29, and she’ll help me judge the photos. (See other upcoming guests here.) She’s also going to donate a copy of Portland Hill Walks to the winner–I have a copy, and it’s really cool.

Here are the your instructions:

Find a good photo or two that you’ve taken.

Make sure the photo(s) has something to do with urban hiking/walking.

Send the photo(s) and a short description to hikeyeah@gmail.com by 12PM PST on Friday, January 29.

Tune in live at 2pm to episode 33 on January 29th to see if you’ve won.

Write about your best Portland Breakfast story and get published in the next Breakfast in Bridgetown book!
** Contest Extended to January 29th! **

On the Breakfast in Bridgetown show, we’re all about breakfast and writing. So it makes sense that our second contest would be … writing about breakfast!

Here’s the deal: We want to hear your best Portland breakfast story. That might not be the best meal you ever ate, or even the worst, but it will be a good story.

Give us up to 500 words, and we’ll judge it on two categories: how good is the story, and how good is the writing? The judges for this contest are:

Paul Gerald, author and publisher of Breakfast in Bridgetown: The Definitive Guide to Portland’s Favorite Meal, and the host of the PDX.FM radio show of the same name.

Mindie Kniss, frequent guest on the show and organizer of the PDX Breakfast Club on Meetup.com. She’s an editor at two lit magazines and an integrative life coach; see KnissCoaching.com.

A Judge to be Named Later.

We’ll be taking submissions until the end of the day on Friday, January 29th, and we’ll announce the winner during the show on Friday, February 5th.

And what does the winner get? The winning submission will be included in the second edition of Paul’s book – with credit and everything! We’ll even throw in two signed copies of the book when it comes out … sometime.

Mindie and I discussed this contest towards the end of Podcast #10 on January 8.

Alright, all you breakfast-eating literary types – go to it! Email submissions to paul@baconandeggspress.com by Friday, January 29th, 2010.

If variety is the spice of life then we just got a whole lot spicier.
Introducing PDX.FM Channel Two.

During the time we’ve had PDX.FM up and running, all of our shows have been lumped together on one channel. Sports, parenting, reading, smooth jazz music and a lot more. It became apparent to us rather quickly that we needed to have a different home for the more “mild mannered” shows. Thus, PDX.FM Channel 2 was born. Think of it as the more “family” content channel, the place where you might actually learn something, the place that is free of explicit language and content warnings.

Channel 2 launched Monday January 4, 2010 with a new show called The Life Portlandic hosted by Doug Zanger. As he describes it, The Life Portlandic is “an appreciation of Portland, about sharing stories of hops, thanks and optimism…..a daily love letter to the place that we call home”. The show is live every weekday morning at 9AM.

Of course, you will still be seeing some familiar shows on Channel 2 as well. Starting at 11AM every weekday morning, get your daily dose of parenting from Parenting Unplugged Radio. Todd and Laura bring you a series of parenting shows focusing on connecting, educating and supporting parents in their communities in authentic conversation around family and parenting.

We will also continue to bring you shows like Open Book with Diana Page Jordan, Online Recovery Support Radio and the music of Cool Front.

We encourage you to check back often with PDX.FM Channel 2 as the schedule of shows will be growing rapidly. After all, this is Portland, Oregon – one of the most creative places on the planet.

Hosted by Zanger
Weekdays at 9am on PDX.FM Channel Two

Greeting cards are, in some ways, the original Twitter. Get a few words in to express how you feel and see what happens. The words might be funny, sardonic, epic, powerful, sad, humble or somewhere in between. But behind the “quick,” there are layers and layers of emotion, depth and nuance.

Much like Portland.

Outsiders laud (or deride) us for our ways and way of life. We are envied. We are a quirky curiosity. In some ways, we are overlooked and quickly cast aside with a few words and not much thought.

And that’s not all bad.

As long as we all know that we are here together, sharing something cool, that’s really all that matters.

And that’s what The Life Portlandic is all about.

It’s more than a show, it’s an appreciation of Portland, our state and the Pacific Northwest. It’s about sharing stories of hope, thanks and optimism. It’s about the people and organizations that do good. It’s the collective thought and conversation that continues to galvanize the Portlandic vibe.

The Life Portlandic, a daily love letter to the place that we call home.

Listen to The Life Portlandic, Hosted by Zanger
Weekdays at 9am on PDX.FM Channel Two.
