Things From Another World & Cort and Fatboy proudly present The Walking Dead. Sunday, October 31st, 2010.

Things From Another World Sponsors Screening of AMC’s The Walking Dead Television Series

Portland, OR, August 24, 2010 — Hot on the heels of AMC’s announcement of the premiere date of The Walking Dead television series, Things From Another World (TFAW) brings you The Walking Dead at McMenamin’s Bagdad Theater to be hosted by local celebrities Cort & Fatboy.

Robert Kirkman’s wildly popular The Walking Dead comic book series, published by Image Comics, follows a group of survivors in the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse as they struggle to survive in a world where food is scarce, people are unpredictable, and danger lurks around every corner.

The AMC television series is being adapted by three-time Oscar nominee Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile), stars Andrew Lincoln, Sarah Wayne Callies, Jon Bernthal, and Laurie Holden, and features special effects make-up by the incomparable Greg Nicotero.

The special 90-minute series premiere of The Walking Dead debuts on Sunday, October 31 at 10PM on the AMC network. The premiere will air, for free, at McMenamin’s Bagdad Theater and will be hosted by Portland’s own Cort & Bobby “Fatboy” Roberts. The talkshow duo are no strangers to taking a TV series and turning it into an event, having previously transformed SE Portland into a giant living room with public screenings of both the final seasons of Battlestar Galactica and LOST, featuring live appearances by contributing writers and actors. Comics and graphic novels will be available for sale before and after the screening and many great prizes will be given away during the event, provided by Image Comics and Things From Another World. Prizes will be awarded for the best Walking Dead-related costume.

WHAT: The Cort and Fatboy Midnight Movie – FERRIS BUELLER’S DAY OFF
WHEN: Friday, September 3rd, 2010. Doors at 10pm, Film at 11pm
WHERE: McMenamin’s Bagdad Theater, 3702 SE Hawthorne Blvd, Portland OR
HOW MUCH: $3.00 Admission, must be 21 and Over

The Back-To-School season is celebrated in a variety of ways: Parents get trashed off boxed wine after a hellish summer of rugrats knocking around the house. Kids pose and preen endlessly in front of their mirror after suckering said parents out of hundreds of dollars in ridiculous fashions that have a shelf-live about half as long as their attention spans. And while stores are advertising sales on Pee-Chees and Pencil Boxes, and Teachers are fitting themselves for hockey pads, we here at cortandfatboy.com are celebrating Back-To-School by championing one of the worst influences of the 80′s as he plays the best game of hooky ever witnessed.

McMenamin’s Bagdad Theater has secured a 35mm print of John Hughes’ teen classic FERRIS BUELLER’S DAY OFF, and Friday, September 3rd, hosts Cort Webber and Bobby “Fatboy” Roberts will be hosting the screening of what many consider to be John Hughes’ most polished and hilarious of his 80′s teen films. $3.00 admission to watch the movie the way it was intended to be seen – in widescreen, on film, and not hacked to hell and back by network censors who cackle over their computers while wrecking classic lines by Matthew Broderick, Alan Ruck, Edie McClurg, Jennifer Grey and Charlie Sheen.

Doors open at 10pm, the film starts at 11pm after a short trailer reel cobbled together from DVD’s, old 80′s TV ads, and various internet detritus deemed humorous enough. Along with the screening, Cort and Fatboy will be joined by film critics Mike Russell of the Oregonian and www.culturepulp.com, and Erik Henriksen, senior editor of the Portland Mercury for a commentary on the film that will be made available online at www.cortandfatboy.com the day before the screening.

Poster artwork, further details, and information about the Cort and Fatboy show can be found at www.cortandfatboy.com. Cort and Fatboy airs Monday-Friday, from 10am to 11am, on www.pdx.fm, and the podcast can be subscribed to via iTunes or any .rss feed reader.

This week on GET FIT Portland we go back to school. We talk with Gina Rau of Aisle 7 how plan and pack healthier lunches for you kids and the dreaded school cafeteria. Gina develops wellness programs for grocery shoppers during the day at Aisle7, founded Change Becomes Change to share simple ideas on making change happen, and recently launched Feed Our Families, a website and services dedicated to help parents seeking healthier choices for their children. The common thread through all her work is a desire to help people make healthy decisions – for themselves, their family, their environment, and their community. She loves having fun with her family, enjoying good wine with friends, and finding new ways to make the most of rainy days in the Northwest.

A look back at PDX.FM's Baconfest 2010 - Portland's most amazing summer bacon festival.

Another year, another s**t ton of bacon goodness.

This year, Portland Baconfest was even bigger, badder, and more delicious than the last one with more donations to the Oregon Food Bank, more vendors, more booze, louder bands, and certainly a lot more of everyone’s favorite meat product. PDX.FM was on hand throughout the entire experience, all 8 grueling hours of it – and why wouldn’t we be, we threw the party after all, right?

Below is just a taste (pun intended) of the fun we had and we’re already planning Baconfest 2011. But first, we’d like to thank the following people for their generous donations of time, prizes, and effort – Baconfest was a huge success and we couldn’t have pulled it off without you:

Vendors

East Burn, MacTarnahan’s, Get Fit, Cookie Peddlers, Tim’s Chips, Skillet Bacon Jam, Mobster Meatballs, Bacon Skateboards, What Do Bacon Do?, Smokin’ Joes, Bacon Salt, Bakon Vodka, the Timbers Army, and Sugar Buzz Bakers

Prize Donations

Amnesia Brewing, Underdog Sports, Get Fit, Paul Gerald, Bacon Skateboards, Mike Vogel, Mia Sonatina Cellars, Portland Timbers, Gypsy Restaurant & Lounge, and Rose City Rollers

The peace-loving Republic of Sardun is facing constant incursions from hostile neighbor Gamibia. Unwilling to retaliate and initiate war, high-ranking Sardunian military officials Major Zara and General Byrne-White arrange a rendezvous with MegaForce, a hi-tech and super-secret phantom army of top-shelf fighting men from all over the world, to ask for help in ending Gamibia’s attacks. Ace Hunter, leader of MegaForce, is happy to take on the job as he has a past with Gamibian military leader Duke Guerrera, an old military academy friend who turned to evil.

And he stole Ace’s favorite lighter.

About 7th Planet Picture Show

7th Planet PIcture Show is an MST3K-inspired live celebration of cinematic camp, taking place twice a month at the Mt. Tabor Theater in Portland, Oregon. Will Radik and 2 or more hardened camp cinema veterans will face down some of the most ridiculous, awkward, and tasteless films born unto this pitiless earth, with only microphones (and probably alcohol). Audience members are not only allowed but encouraged to shout at the movie themselves and leave their cell phones on.

Though the live commentary is the heart of the show, it doesn’t stop there. At the end of the film, audiences may want to mill around the luxurious and dark Mt. Tabor lounge, perhaps discussing the finer points of the cinematic piece they’ve just viewed. At this point, Will may show clips or behind the scenes footage pertaining to the film, ridiculous clips of just about anything else, trailers, or even another movie. Beyond the main film and commentary, 7th Planet Picture Show is, well, like a bo-. Never mind.

Did I mention there’s a bar right in the back of the lounge where the movies are shown? Well, there is. You can even watch it from a barstool. Isn’t that grand?

7pm, 21 and Over, Free Admission. Suggested donation $5 (entirely optional)

Johnson builds tracks from the ground up, taking samples of his work on horns, synthesizers, whatever fits. From his webpage: “While informed by a scholarly interest in music across genre and location, the project is rooted firmly within club culture.” Johnson is in the finishing stages of releasing an EP on his own Boomarm Nation label: entitled “Mean Sound” the EP is another in his series of Gulls recordings and features Jesse’s progressive sound tapestry of solid grooves layered with samples. The music lies somewhere between and beyond ambient, techno, and club…call it experimental, electronic, progressive…mainly listen in and open your ears to Jesse Johnson’s bold steps in experimental sound system culture.

Chris Lay has been drumming ever since he can remember…pots and pans eventually made room for a full kit and studying percussion at the U of O. In 2004 Chris felt the bite of melody, harmony and lyrics, and began writing songs to layer over his rhythmic ideas. Since then, Chris has made music his life’s work compiling self-produced CD’s, performing solo, in bands, on guitar, drums, keys and vocals. With a smooth voice that blends as easily as leads, Chris can often be found backing up other performers in the Pdx music scene. He has just become host of a Tuesday night singer spotlight at Macadam’s.

We’ll talk about his take on the Portland music scene, where his path is leading him and how his Tuesday night show is going. Tune in Thursday, August 19th at 3:00PM.

Naseem Rakha, author of The Crying Tree, talks about growing up in Chicago, the powerful story that sparked the story, redemption and humanity and more. Friday, August 20th on Exceptional Women NW at 2:30pmPT.

THE CRYING TREE is that story, told through the lives of two main characters: Irene Stanley, the mother of slain 15-year-old Steven Joseph Stanley, and Tab Mason, the stoic and determined superintendent of the Oregon State Penitentiary who is preparing to execute the boy’s murderer. Powerful and touching, this book provides insight into how murder, death row, capital punishment, and enduring these experiences deeply impact victims’ families.

THE CRYING TREE is a story of things not being what they seem, family secrets and how they reverberate through lives, and being submerged in loss, yet finding ways to go on. It’s a story of forgiveness and redemption and of the difficult decisions that lead people through life and that ultimately give life meaning.

THE CRYING TREE is set in both southern Illinois, central Oregon, and Salem’s Oregon State Penitentiary.

Naseem is an award-winning author and journalist whose stories have been heard on NPR’s All Things Considered, Morning Edition, Marketplace Radio, Christian Science Monitor, and Living on Earth. She lives in Oregon with her husband, son, and many animals. When Naseem isn’t writing, she’s reading, knitting, hiking, gardening, or just watching the seasons roll in and out.

Dinosaur Mayhem in 35mm - Friday, August 6th, 2010 at McMenamin's Bagdad Theater • $3 admission, 21 and over.

WHAT: Jurassic Park – The Cort and Fatboy Midnight Movie
WHEN: Friday, August 6th, 11:00pm
WHERE: McMenamin’s Bagdad Theater
HOW MUCH: $3.00 admission. Must be 21 or older

Jurassic Park is probably the closest Spielberg has come to the thrill-ride heights of Raiders of the Lost Ark. Some might say that nothing he’s done since Raiders has come close to that masterpiece, but let me ask you this: Did Raiders of the Lost Ark have friggin’ DINOSAURS in it? No, it did not. And in a world where we’re inundated with schlock like Dinocroc, it’s nice to be reminded that at one point in the early 90′s, someone knew how to make these things look nice and scary. The people in the movie ain’t too bad, either: Richard Attenborough, Samuel L. Jackson, Laura Dern, and nerd heartthrob Jeff Goldblum at his smarmiest.

Many haven’t seen this spectacle on a screen bigger than their TV. Those lucky enough to have done so, probably haven’t seen it in a theater since the summer of 1993. Now’s your chance to relive those days (for the first time, in some cases) at one of the finest beer theaters in the entire country, McMenamin’s Bagdad Theater on SE Hawthorne Blvd.

Pre-show entertainment will be a blast of 80′s nostalgia: An episode of 1980′s TV series “Amazing Stories” will play while people work their way through the concession line and settle in for a long night of prehistoric mayhem. The chosen episode is “The Mission,” directed by Spielberg, starring Kiefer Sutherland, Casey Siemaszko, and Kevin Costner.

Admission is, as always, 3 dollars. The doors will open at 10pm, the Amazing Stories episode will start shortly thereafter, and the movie will begin at 11pm. A commentary, featuring Mike Russell (The Oregonian) David Walker (BadAzzMofo.com) Erik Henriksen (The Portland Mercury) and Dawn Taylor (Cinematical.com/pdx.fm’s Ham-Fisted Radio & Legion of News) will be made available for download the day before the screening so viewers can, if they choose, load up their iPod/mp3 player and bring the conversation in with them.

About Cort and Fatboy
“Cort and Fatboy” airs 10am-11am, Monday thru Friday, at http://www.pdx.fm. Episodes of the show, along with previous Midnight Movie commentaries, and the Jurassic Park poster artwork, can be downloaded athttp://www.cortandfatboy.com

Join us Monday, August 2nd on Morning Submission as we chat with comedian Tom Lenk!

Actor and comedian, Tom Lenk (Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Transformers, Broadway’s Rock of Ages), is giving Stumptown what she really wants – an alternative comedy/storytelling show live in Portland! Packed full of all new, mortifying and crazy tales, Lenk recounts his recent mis-adventures on and off the Broadway Stage. Take that Portland! Audiences have described his onstage shenanigans as “A one-man comedy spectacle of awesome!” “An irreverent, sometimes moving, always funny tour de force” and “The best way to spend a Saturday night other than getting laid!” His hodge-podge, prop-tastic, show and tell, song and dance, audience interactive, out of left field, Bob Ross inspired stylings are sure to give you laugh induced abdominal soreness…..

This one night comedy event is the fist stop on Lenk’s grass-roots, semi-national tour. Thanks to requests on Facebook and Twitter, Tom Lenk is bringing his live show to the very cities that have demanded to be Lenk-invaded! Be warned, if this show were a movie, it would be rated R! Strong language and adult content! Get the kids a babysitter and and mosey on down to the Thea-tah! Come have some laughs before you go to that hip downtown Friday night loft-party you were planning on…no one shows up to those things ‘til 11pm anyway.

Running Time: 1 hour 45 min. plus intermission.

Every Tuesday on the Morning Submission we like to play a little game…a game that involves drinking weird stuff. We like to call it Tuesday Drunkmission. Every Tuesday starting around 9:15ish, we fill em up and gulp em down. We try to have a variety of things to try, but sometimes, we just find one and stick with it….for better or for worse

This week: It’s all about The Harvey Wallbanger…..The Harvey Wallbanger was brought to international prominence by then Galliano salesman, George Bednar. Legend has it that the drink was named after a Manhattan Beach surfer who was a regular patron of Duke’s ‘Blackwatch’ Bar on Sunset Blvd in Hollywood during the early 1950′s.

Join us on Tuesday the 27th at 9:15 am the Morning Submission crew will be sucking down a Harvey, or two, or ten live on PDX.FM.

This week 7/29 on Between the Notes at 3:00: Acoustic Minds, named Portland’s #1 band in 2009, Amanda and Jenni Price offer up “soulful melodies layered by twin harmonies… yumm…”
(facebook quote)

Acoustic Minds, the five-piece folk rock band fueled by twin sister harmonies and deft exploration of contemporary acoustic musical styles, have released their second CD, Live at Mississippi Studios. The CD is the follow-up to last years studio album Time, and has already made a splash on Garageband.coms Folk Rock charts as well their Blues, R&B, and Jazz top picks. Its rare to find a band versed in so many styles and able to bring something fresh to the mix, but this is exactly what sets Acoustic Minds apart from the crowd. They can burn up a stage with Indigo Girls-like power anthems (24 Years), acoustic jazz/blues picking and smoldering gospel-like testifying (Stuck), or sophisticated rhythms and adult contemporary singer-songwriting (Then Ill be Smiling). The 13-track album is a perfect introduction to the raw power of their live shows, allowing listeners to enjoy their tight musicianship, soaring vocals, and, inventive style.

Acoustic Minds features Jenni and Amanda Price (vocals), Nathan Milton (acoustic guitar, vocals), Franklin Gallwas (percussion) and Nathan Carver (bass). Live at Mississippi Studios was recorded at Portland, Oregon’s renowned acoustic cafe Mississippi Studios by Jim Brunberg, and mastered by Ryan Foster. It is available through CDBaby.com or at live shows and Portland-area music stores.

Acoustic Minds began as a three-piece, with twins Jenni and Amanda Price sharing their love of singer-songwriters like Sarah McLachlan and Joni Mitchell with acoustic guitar. They found like-minded artists around the Portland area and eventually filled out their sound to a full band. Their first CD Time was released in 2005, and launched a national 59-city tour.

It’s high time for berries and this week on Lelo Homemade, we’re talking berries. I recently did a taste test and recorded my findings for you…we’ll talk about the flavors of raspberries to tayberries, and plenty in between. And we’ll even talk a little bit about pie. Mmmm, pie. But the bulk of the show is about chicken keeping and an interview with Kevin McGovney and how he was inspired by the Tours de Coops to build his own chicken coop.

You have been cordially invited to join forces with PDX.FM and march from watering hole to watering hole as we pay tribute to our magical four legged ancestors, the unicorn.
You wanna see Inception? Sure you do. If the freaky dreamscape in the trailers didn’t do it, if the promise of Joseph Gordon Levitt, Leo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Ellen Page, and Michael Caine acting their asses off didn’t do it, if the advance notice that this is Christopher Nolan’s masterpiece didn’t do it, I’m betting that BWAANGGGGGGG did.

You know there’s only one theater in PDX equipped to properly handle that level of BWANGGGGGGG.

10:30pm on Friday, July 16th, we’re hosting yet another in our series of Loud Shows at The Roseway Theater, home of the finest a/v presentation in Portland. You can purchase tickets now at rosewaytheater.com (click the “About/Info” link) or simply show up at the box-office around 10:00 and buy there.

If you haven’t been to the Roseway yet, this is definitely a great choice of film to show off the fabulousness of the theater. If you have been to the Roseway, you already know this is the best place to see Christopher Nolan’s mind spill all over the big screen.

Spread the word, and experience this Summer’s saving grace with us at The Roseway Theater, Friday, July 16th, 10:30pm

Barry Johnson, former arts editor at the Oregonian will be on Redoing Media with host Betsy Richter Thursday July 15 at 1:30PM to talk about his post-O life, including Portland Arts Watch.

Portland Arts Watch is an independent Portland, Oregon-based journalism website that looks at the arts, design and culture in the Northwest. Its impulses are historical and observational. It seeks to build open-ended descriptions and open-minded arguments and believes that both are improved by the responses of its community. It respects creative activity and civil discussion wherever it finds them. Portland Arts Watch accepts queries, stories, criticism and essays in text, video and audio media.

The editor of Portland Arts Watch is Barry Johnson, a freelance writer and editor. My professional history includes stints as arts editor, arts columnist, visual arts critic and theater critic at The Oregonian during the past 26 years. Before that I was the arts editor and a columnist at Willamette Week in Portland, and my journalism career began at the now-defunct Seattle Sun, where my various jobs included classified ad manager, dance critic and publisher. I also worked as a freelance sports stringer for the wire service UPI in Seattle. I have written catalog essays for art exhibitions of work by Portland artists Carl Morris, George Johanson and William Givler.

Drinking For the Win! It's Tuesday Drunkmission. Send in your suggestions for our next drink. It all happens Tuesdays at 9:15ish - on your Morning Submission.

Every Tuesday on the Morning Submission we like to play a little game…a game that involves drinking weird stuff. We like to call it Tuesday Drunkmission. Every Tuesday starting around 9:15ish, we fill em up and gulp em down. We try to have a variety of things to try, but sometimes, we just find one and stick with it….for better or for worse.

In the past few weeks we have drank some unusual concoctions, most of which you, our listeners have suggested. They’ve included: Cement Mixers (along with some curdled Bailey’s), candy infused vodka, fruit punch flavored vodka, and tequila and pickle juice (which was a favorite).

We invite you to send in your suggestions to weird drinks that we can make and try. Send an email to info@morningsubmission.com with your recipe and we will see if we can knock it back.

Krista Herring, often called “the best secret kept in the music industry" brings soulful, elegant prose, acoustic guitar and powerful, captivating vocals to the new hour-long Between the Notes, Thursday, July 22nd at 3:00.

Krista Herring, often called “the best secret kept in the music industry” brings soulful, elegant prose, acoustic guitar and powerful, captivating vocals to the new hour-long Between the Notes, Thursday, July 22nd at 3:00.

— From her MySpace Page —

Portland based singer/songwriter and winner of the 2009 Effigy Award for Best Folk Song of the Year for her song Free, Krista Herring has been called “the best secret kept in the music industry.” After countless hours of work in several studios, she has just released her impressive debut album, “Lay It Down.” Her songs are soulful, elegant prose set to the beat of her acoustic guitar and delivered by powerful, captivating vocals. She is usually accompanied by her band of talented musicians who bring a great dynamic that is a pleasure to witness.

Some believe that the soul and spirit of this generation’s music has been lost to a void of propaganda-driven, money-hungry, industry-manufactured musicians and bands, meant to spoon-feed people what, they are assumed to want to hear. However, it’s safe to say that any listener with an open heart and soulful intellect will find that the lost spirit of this generation’s musical paradigm has been resurrected in the illustrious talents of new musicians and artists such as Krista Herring.

Where are you going to be on July 2 and 3 this year? How about joining the PDX.FM crew down at the Pioneer Courthouse Square for 30 Hour Day?

Where are you going to be on July 2 and 3 this year? How about joining the PDX.FM crew down at the Pioneer Courthouse Square for 30 Hour Day? That’s right, watch in awe as a few of your favorite (or not-so-favorite) PDX.FM personalities push the limits of endurance – and hopefully have some fun doing it – while helping make 30 Hour Day a reality this year.

What’s 30 Hour Day?

We’re glad you asked. 30 hour day is a project developed by Cami Kaos of Strange Love Live and Rick Turoczy of Silicon Florist. The concept? Livestream a variety of entertainment for 30 hours straight in an effort to raise money for charities.

What’s PDX.FM doing for 30 Hour Day?

In short, probably busting some serious ass running the audio for the whole damn thing. Beyond that though, we’ll be broadcasting a special Saturday morning edition of Morning Submission at 8am on July 3rd, as well as quite a few other fun little odds and ends throughout the event. Check back for more details as they become available.

What do I do?

Join us July 2 and 3 for entertainment, interviews, and interesting goings on—while helping some very worthwhile causes. All from the cozy warmth of your own Web browser.

More details are now available at www.30hourday.org

The Cort and Fatboy Midnight Movie: Independence Day
Friday, July 2nd, 2010 at the Bagdad Theater

The Portland Mercury and pdx.fm present
The Cort and Fatboy Midnight Movie

INDEPENDENCE DAY (1996)

Maybe the most obvious Midnight Movie pick we’ve ever made, and yet, sometimes the obvious choice is the right one. And hey, if anyone wants to let Leverage Producer Dean Devlin know that we’re showing this thing on Friday, July 2nd, please do. He might like to see it on a big screen with a hungry crowd for the first time since 1996. You might want to, as well. Lotta you haven’t seen it the way it should be seen since then. A lotta you haven’t EVER seen it projected on a giant screen in 35mm. Rectify that.

3$ Admission. 21 and Over. Doors at 10pm, Film at 11pm. Tell your friends. Don’t let them miss the glory of Randy Quaid giving a spaceship an airplane enema. The power of the most badass macbook of all time. The awesome leaping power of a pole-dancer’s beloved pet. And of course, Will Smith saying “Hi” the best way he knows how.

Hope to see you there.

Do you know your ham hocks from your chitlins? If you salivate at the mention of sweet filet mignon, then you can’t miss PDX.FM’s MEAT WEEK at pub quiz locations all over Portland June 15-17!

Pub Quiz USA and PDX.FM Proudly Present: MEAT WEEK!

Tuesday-Thursday, June 15-17, 2010
7:00 pm (Various Locations-see below)

Do you know your ham hocks from your chitlins? How about your short ribs from your brisket? If you salivate at the mention of sweet filet mignon, then you can’t miss PDX.FM’s MEAT WEEK at pub quiz locations all over Portland June 15-17!

Grab five of your closest carnivorous friends to form a crack trivia team of expert meat eaters to kick the chuck out of the competition and win PRIZES or even cold hard CASH! PDX.FM’s very own Robert Wagner and Emily Gibson will join Portland’s own Quizmaster Polly at the Bitter End on Tuesday, and hosts Robert and Emily will guest host rounds at Thirsty Lion and Space Room Wednesday night. All quizzes start at 7pm.

But wait, there’s more! Tip the scales in your favor by bringing in plastic meat, one for each of your team members. Each hunk of fake-o baco will bank your team bonus points before the game even begins. Not so good at meat trivia? Not to worry—there will be plenty of other questions about various subjects including potatoes, roller derby, and other non-edible things that make you go mmmmm. So come down to any pub quiz location this week and rip off a meaty piece of bloody good trivia. You and your homies just may walk out with a pound of prizes or a wad of cash for the effort!
