Join me this Thursday, March 11th at 1 pm for this week’s edition of Redoing Media. I’m veering from the usual format (designed to accomodate the day job) to broadcast live from the pdx.fm studios. And my guest this week?
None other than Matt Davis, News Editor of the Portland Mercury. Matt, who also shares his POV on both his personal blog — Matt Davis Opens His Mouth — and on Twitter (as @mattdavis999), is known as a fearless & outspoken critic of Portland’s current Police Bureau practices, among others.
I’ll be talking with him about that quote above & how it may apply the state of journalism here in Portland right now. Where are we? Where do we need to go? How are we going to get there? And since Matt’s got that firebrand reputation working for him, I’m sure we’ll hear plenty about how PDX media producers just aren’t rising to the challenge…!

Among other non- surprising groans to be had in this Matt Davis thing, is having to listen to a shallow lil’ guy talk very fast and use many words saying nothing much, and endure once again his re-curring problem with “Pulitzer Envy”.
“I have an enormous ego, but THE REASON my ego is so enormous is partly about getting the message out to Portlanders. I mean I’m really interested in getting people to read the God damned news….that’s what I do.
“I guess the point I’d like to make about Rupert Murdoch is the guy knows how to get people to pick up copies”.
“Historically-profit has been the big motivator for journalists, you know? …You know what I’m sayin’?”
The lesson maybe, If one has an amusing accent and talks at the speed of a triple espresso, it might get you by for a while in the world of non thinker types. The Matt Davis 15 minutes sucks.
